I wanted to major in Business Admin or Economics. It is my first semester and I have B's in Macroeconomics and Financial Accounting. They cannot be raised to A's even if I get 100% on the final. Ironically, I have A's in all of my other classes. I will have about a 3.56 GPA at the end of this semester.

I gave up some lower-tiered UC's to go to community college and get another shot at UCLA, so yes, prestige is important to me and I am not so passionate about Business that I would want to stick to it if I cannot get into Berkeley, UCLA or USC. I thought it was what I wanted to do, but if I can't get A's in my pre-reqs... maybe that is saying something and I should major in something else... granted, I haven't been trying as hard in my classes as I could have.. but I don't know... should I stick it out for next semester and try to get A's in Microeconomics and Managerial Accounting? Or should I just give up now and change my major?

As you may already know, UCLA bizecon and UCB Haas are incredibly competitive. I have known people with 4.0 GPA and TAP that have been turned aside. The best thing you could do is TAP and apply for business like you were planning, but also try and complete major prep for another major you are interested in and put that as your second choice.

In reality, your GPA is going to severely hurt your chances.

I’m sorry if i come off as harsh, i just hope to help you so you can get started on the right track.

Yes exactly not harsh at all. I’m aware how competitive the majors are. This is my first semester so I REALLY know I need to step it up. I still have time to change my major and get out in 2 years if I do it now, which is why I’m considering it.

I mean I could finish off the pre-reqs for Business AND the pre-reqs for another major … one bad shot, and one better shot. Or I can complete pre-reqs for two completely different majors… and get two better shots? Do you know what I mean? And I mean for Berkeley I only get one shot, so… =(

If you are not passionate about business, look into other majors. Take classes you are interested in to fulfill GE requirements and you might find the right major for you just by doing so. I found my major that way. I thought I wanted to do psych or sociology, but took a linguistics class and knew this was the major I wanted. Try looking up un-impacted majors at UCLA and Berkeley. See if you are interested in any of them and take some classes for that major.

It all depends on how passionate you are about Business. As far as UCLA is concerned, i believe you cannot switch your major into Bizecon, so if you are not applying for that major, make sure it is something you are interested in. (TAP with non impacted majors does not require an outstanding gpa).

I am not too familiar with UCB policy and major transferring so hopefully someone can clear this up for you. If i were in your shoes i would first discover what major i was truly passionate about by taking some GE and make sure i got good grades in those classes.

Once you apply to schools, if business is still your preferred Major, i would go ahead and put it on your applications for both schools (with a non-impacted second choice for LA).

Main focus here is getting high grades in the rest of the courses you take so your options can remain open.

Hello in there? You want to give up or change majors because you got 2 Bs?!

WHAT THE **** IS WRONG WITH YOU?!

With that kinda attitude I hope you change your major, because I wouldn’t want someone running a large company that abandons ship at the first sight of something not going as planned.

just make sure you are happy with your alt major and decide from there. it’s up to admissions whether to let you in for bzecon or not…i haven’t heard of a reasonably competitive applicant being denied their alt major, pre-reqs or not.

My friend today after a hard calc test: “Do you think ucla and berkeley toss all the application paper on the floor then randomly grab some and call it a day” LMAO. Well ucla and berkeley have some really weird admission methods.

I recall hearing about a UC teacher that threw their papers on a stairway, and the ones that landed at the top got As, and the lower they landed the lower the grade was.

Since it’s your first semester, you have Spring, summer, Fall semesters coming up to work at your GPA and EC’s. You still have time to work towards your goal. Don’t panic! Take a second to reflect on your options before deciding anything too soon.

nah this guy is screwed. Macro is alot easier than micro. and accounting is cake. Imagine what Calc II and Micro will do to him. I dont think you have what It takes. Switch majors. They check what GPA u got in prereqs and for econ, there arent many
