Hello,

I have a question, What would be the difference if one went with a BS in Petroleum engineering first then got his MS in PetroE or MBA, than someone who did General Engineering first then got MS in PetroE ? I assume it will narrow him to Petroleum related fields/jobs only, what are other things it might affect him/her, such as having a lower chance of nailing a job than others that went with the other route ?

Thank you in advance.

The main issue with doing gen E is that you will have a lot of deficiencies in the petro area, meaning you will have a lot of ground to make up in grad school. Also, general engineers might have trouble finding a job right away since most firms are looking for very specific engineers to do a very specific task… Not a jack-of-all-trades engineer. I would recommend finding an area that interests you and pursuing it, if that’s petro, maybe do chem E so if you feel like switching there is a plethora of other career opportunities other than petro.

Thank you very much for your reply, I guess I’ll go ChemE then Masters in PetroE, and yeah I had my mind set on PetE but, you never know what the future may hold tbh, so I guess it’s better to play it safe or something.

Edit: Umm I believe going either of these paths requires same amount of years (ChemE>MS PetEn, BS PetE > MS PetE or MBA) ?
