I'm a high school junior (asian) in NJ. I have a 3.8 gpa un-weighted, and a 4.34 weighted, and mostly likely a 3.86 un-weighted by the end of this year. I have a 2200 SAT: 780 M, 700 CR, 720 R. I have yet to take my SAT2s but am scoring 750s-800s in Biology, Chemistry, and Math 2. I have shadowing hours with my local pediatrician, and more hours with other doctors to come. I participate in red cross( 30 hours), and an out of school volunteering (150 hours). In addition i have some local hospital hours as well.

bsmd programs i'm thinking about:
Boston University
Drexel
George Washington
Howard
Northeastern
Northwestern
Penn State
St. Louis

the above poster has no clue what he is talking about if he thinks slu bs/md is harder to get into than northwestern hpme…

Your GPA is on the low side so it will hurt you. Your SAT (1480 CR+M) is average so that won’t compensate for a low GPA. Your medical experience will be a boost, but there is nothing unique besides hospital volunteering and shadowing. You may get an interview for some of these schools, but unless you really convey your passion for medicine in your essay and interviews, it will be hard for you to get into these bs/md programs (maybe except howard).

Northwestern would be a big reach looking at their SAT avgs for the BSmd program and GPA is low as well for programs that accept at sometimes less than 5% of the applicants. But if your essays truly show why you want to be in the BSMD programs, you might still have a chance :)

i’m planning on retaking the SATs, with an intention of scoring 2300+. Would that help my chances as it would compensate for my somewhat low gpa?

It would help a little, but you have to remember that BS/MD programs are beyond competitive. Also although you have medical ECs they could be strong. Make sure you are applying to safeties and some non BS/MD programs…
