***BS/MD Interview Notification for Class of 2013***

msxkjp: You will likely see me at psu-jmc. We should have some code words to meet there.

Obviously, this is a subjective question that is impossible to answer without context?

Best based on Med School ranking? WashU USP, UPitt GAP, HPME, Rice/Baylor, etc.

Best based on lax U/G requirements and still get into Med School? PLME, Rice/Baylor,…, WashU USP

@sunitacarmen: Don’t get depressed. I have 2380SAT, 3 SAT subjects 800, Research in heart institute, Hospital volunteering since grade 9. Great grades. Tons of ECs. Still rejections from Wayne, GW, Case, HPME and many more coming. No idea what they look for.

Anyone have any new news on the BU SMED call for interviews?

@jandjfishing I’ve heard this is the last week to get a notification

Let’s hope BU gets back to us. However at this point, I am getting so slim on hope. I hope they consider me “good enough” for the initial interview, but I don’t even know what these programs are looking for anymore. I’m hoping for better luck. I also just found out, from one of my classmates, that they were offered the interview for Pitt GAP- I wasn’t even given the application, and when I called them, they directly said it was because of my rank (which is two spots better than my classmates- she’s 10, I’m 8…). Do you think it’s worth calling Pitt? I know it’s late, but it honestly was not my fault.

Talking about ranking these programs, I found an amazing stat last night - Baylor med only charges 24K/year for out of state tuition! Thats less than OOS for many 4 year colleges such CWRU and UPitt! So if you take this into account (and a 4 yr degree from Rice), it could well be one of the best valued bs/md program out there.

matrix007 - so u mean hpme only calls only as many as they have seats for?

@fallpsat No, I am sure they call atleast 90 or 100 for 40 seats and everyone who is called has a fair shot. However, I did hear that they do not have a waiting list - empty seat gets rolled over to regular pool.

@KLM here is my take:

U Pitt, Baylor, HPMEM, Rochester,CW (Rest are pretty similar: PLME, Penn/JMC, GWU, AMC, BU) - My ranking is very subjective, but is loosely based on the US News college ranking. Again, based on OOS tuition fee, I would rank Baylor as the best choice.

Not sure about WashU(i know they 've this insane MCAT requirement), VCU, Drexel, UMKC etc as I have not studied their program.

@sjshah do you mean the girl who is from your school ranked at 10 got interview from Pitt GAP? What is her ethnicity?

@matrix007

Thanks. How about UMKC, UConn, VCU, UM?

@desigirl i will internet slap you if you tell us about how worried you are of getting into a program :slight_smile: you have a great chance and you will get into a program, stop worrying!

@butterfli clean your mailbox, i can’t pm you

Anyone else at all applied to uconn or usciences programs an have an interview for either? Feeling left out here

@egy i applied to usciences and submitted my supplemental but haven’t heard back. i just submitted my supp yesterday though

@sanguine I’m still waiting for amc I need to submit rpi and they will review so…

@sanguine I will Internet shut up only after April 1st :p

@ boycottivy: she is asian, just as I am. However, I wasn’t even offered the supplement application- they didn’t even let me apply and when I called them about it, they said I was not eligible to apply bc my rank was not good enough…I didn’t even understand how ranked 8th was bad, but I went along with it. Now, I find out that someone ranked worse than me got the interview (meaning they were allowed to apply) and I’m kinda ****ed off. Should I call? Pitt was my #1 before they told me that I was flat out rejected.

@sjshah, that is strange. I really don’t know what kind of students Pitt are looking for. They rejected a lot of students who have outstanding stats. Good luck!

Ultimately, I’m not that concerned about medical school rank. You never really get a sense of a certain place is good for you unless you actually visit and see. What ideas come to mind when you think of UMDNJ and NJMS in Newark, NJ? I’m going to die/get shot? I went there last Friday and had an excellent experience, which was delightfully unexpected. They are super-hands on, even in the first year: students in the apartments can litterally walk, all indoors, through the medical school, dental school, and even into the ER and the rest of the hospital. The have preceptorships with physicians starting the second year, opprotunities to work with patients and practive patient intervieiwing in the first few years, and mandatory mentoring with upper level students to prepare for the later years. So to all those who are concerned about ranking, the final determination should be based on that magical “fit,” rather than what a newspaper says is the best, which we all know is absolutely biased and inaccurate. Placements in residencies is a consideration, but looking that far ahead is a bit much. Remember, you have to get into one of these programs first…
