When did you get the email saying to apply to GAP?

Making our back to Texas after son interview at SBU and U of the Sciences. From what my son told me, I think he did well for the U of the Sciences interview but not at the SBU interview. Wish it could be the reverse. By the way, for those who have been doubting U of the Sciences, my son was told at the interview that the first batch only had one student and he did well and decided to apply out and got into Jefferson.

@actsat2400 I think it was around mid December.

wow Pitt is ridiculous, i applied pre-med and never got any information regarding the application, no acceptance or rejection

@actsat2400 Sorry to hear that. This whole thing is difficult to understand.

Called Pitt GAP office today. They indicated that all invites for GAP have been sent.

Did Pitt say when the letters were sent?

they said like january 4th when I called, or thats when they made decisions

Union/AMC

Has anyone received interview notifications recently after submitting the supplemental from Union.

Kean/Drexel

When is DUCOM expected to send out interview invites to Kean/Drexel. Does anyone know. My S got his file forwarded to DUCOM.

For those of you worrying about RPI/AMC, they are still sending out notifications (like I just got mine a few days ago) so don’t lose hope!

@medicalboy- congrats on RPI/AMC!! :D

@actsat2400- Sorry about U Pitt.

Anybody know what’s going on with Stony Brook?

Saint Louis University SLU Med Scholars Program

We asked a number of questions to the SLU Med Scholars Program.They were very helpful and provided fairly detailed answers. Very helpful. Verified that if one joins the program there is an approx. 35% probability of making it into SLU med school provided the student maintains the GPA requirement and fulfills other program requirements.

Here are the Q&A

1) Our understanding is that it is not a guaranteed admission to SLU Medical School like other BS/MD program.

That is true. Admission to our Medical Scholar Program does not assure admission to the School of Medicine.

2) If my son is selected and attends SLU to pursue MSP he will need to maintain a 3.65 GPA throughout the 4 years of his BS program.

Scholars must maintain a 3.65 overall and 3.65 math/science GPA each academic year (fall and spring semesters). This is not a cumulative, but an annual GPA.

3) My son will have completed 65 college credits when he graduates later this year from his High School. Our key question is how many of these credits can he transfer to SLU.
Is there a limit to number of credits that can transfer over?

The maximum number of transferable community college hours is 64. The maximum number of transferable credit hours from an accredited four year institution is 90.

4) If the credits are accepted, we would like our son to pursue a dual major/ or minor to enrich his educational experience while at SLU. Is that possible?

Many Scholars double major. The decision to do so depends on many factors, such as what the major/minor would be. It is entirely possible, but I cannot tell from the transcript lacking additional information. This would be provided at SLU 101.

5) We understand every candidate in the MSP program has to appear for an interview at the end of their Sophomore year to be considered for admission to SLU Medical College.

This is correct, but the student must have maintained the required minimum GPA.

6) How is the Medical Scholars Program different from a pre-med program at a major university?

The SLU Med Scholars program provides students with the opportunity to apply to the SLU School of Medicine at the end of their sophomore year as an undergraduate and potentially gain early, conditional acceptance. Most pre-med programs provide advising for students who wish to go to medical school. We do that as well, but Scholars have the opportunity of applying early and do not have to earn a minimum score on the MCAT.

6) We have been researching acceptance rates of students in the Medical Scholars Program into SLU Medical School. Here is an article published in January by SLU University News
<a href=“Meet the Medical Scholars of SLU – The University News”>http://unewsonline.com/2013/01/24/meet-the-medical-scholars-of-slu/
Can you confirm for us that approx 100 students each year are accepted into MSP with about 45 making it to SLU medical school each year from the MSP program?

Acceptance rates vary by year for both the Medical Scholars program and the Medical School. Last year, 101 students were accepted to the Scholars program and 35 of the 60 sophomores who remained in the program, and were interviewed, received early conditional acceptance to the School of Medicine.

7) **This is very important for us to understand as we have seen reports of 98%, 63% and 33% acceptance rates from MSP into SLU medical school quoted in the internet. None look to be authentic. It will be great if you can provide some detailed statistics of acceptance rates from the MSP program into SLU Medical School. Ideally I would like to get 3 or 4 years of historical data. Could not find anything on this in the SLU web site.

As stated above, the acceptance rates vary from year to year as well as the number of students that begin as a Scholar, and the number of Scholars that maintain their required GPA by the time they reach their interview. Below are the percentages available regarding conditional acceptance of Medical Scholars into SLU School of Medicine following their interview sophomore year.
Interviewed 2013: 58% accepted and 7% deferred
Interviewed 2012: 67% accepted and 19% deferred
Interviewed 2011: 73% accepted and 16% deferred
Interviewed 2010: 76% accepted and 12% deferred

8) What is a deferred status regarding conditional acceptance?
“Deferred” means that the student was not found by the School of Medicine to be fully ready to be offered a conditional acceptance. The student re-interviews the following year.

A student can be deferred by the SLU School of Medicine for several reasons. The first reason being that the student’s GPA is very close to falling below the minimum requirement. Second, because the student has not completed a significant amount of shadowing and research. And third, because their interview was not as strong as the conditionally accepted students.

There are many variables that play into the SLU School of Medicine’s interview and conditional acceptance process. The decisions regarding conditional acceptance, and the Medical Scholar Program requirements are made by the SLU School of Medicine.

9) The acceptance rates have declined almost 20% points in 4 years. We also saw that the GPA requirement had increased from 3.5 to 3.65. Any particular reason for this trend?

Cannot speak to the decline in acceptance rates other than to say that we had many more Scholars who maintained the required GPA than the School of Medicine could offer seats. The increase in the required GPA is in response to the fact that 3.5 is well below the average GPA of 3.7 for students admitted to the SLU School of Medicine.

@BioMedFather - Thank you. Very helpful information on SLU Medical Scholar Program. Did you visit SLU? This program does not have an interview process, were you visiting to see the campus? It sounds like they have a defined number of seats that Medical School will offer to Medical Scholars Program participant and this number is significantly less than number of students selected to Medical Scholars Program

Has anyone gotten GWU invitation for interview? Its supposed to come out this week

@docstudent
No we did not visit SLU. Its an application only process. Obviously not as selective as the other BS/MD program as this has no guaranteed admission. We are not sure what advantage that this program provides over a very good pre-med.

@biomedfather - no we have not heard from Union/AMC

@docstudent- where did you hear that GWU was coming out this week?

most med programs should be out my february 15th

Yeah HPME already came out for those who asked
