What do you people think of NJIT for UG?

I didn’t look through all of the feed but is anyone interviewing for Penn State this week??

@zryzor The decisions on the IIT program will be coming later in the month.

@Midhelper: would hate to spend 3 years there and 4 more SIX BLOCKS away at NJMS

Hello everyone, would my daughter be still hopeful for Boston University BS/MD program interview ? Since it is almost mid February.

@Dildil- yeah she still has a chance! They said they’ll be notifying until mid-February. Good luck!!

Miami HPM interview trip report

There is only 1 more interview day next week so not sure how useful this note would be to the folks here (we just came back from the 4th of 5 sessions), but thought I’d post it anyway, Caveat: I didn’t bring a notebook to take notes so my memory may not be totally accurate on some points.

Most important point for anyone left to interview next week: allow plenty of time to get to the Pavia garage in the morning (there’s no entry barrier so be sure to stop and get a parking pass from the attendant at the entrance gate, who will direct you to where to park). For us, the meeting time was 7:45 am, and they were serious about not waiting for latecomers (there were 3). From the garage the group walked to the Metrorail station (University stop) to head to Civic Center (stop for the medical school), and the coordinator left Metrorail passes and instructions for the latecomers with the parking garage attendant. Once the group was settled in the auditorium another coordinator went out to fetch the 3 latecomers, so all they missed was the beginning of the introductory presentation (the interviews didn’t start until 10 am), but it’s gotta be nerve wrecking for the young people. Miami/Coral Gables traffic was unbelievable; we stayed at a hotel 10 minutes away (timing it the night before) and in the morning it took 35 minutes!

The introductory presentation said that this year Miami is interviewing 86 people and expecting to offer admission to anything between 15 to 25 candidates. They don’t have a set number (quota) in mind. Our interview day had 22 candidates.

They don’t have a waiting list for when not all the offered candidates choose to enroll. One recent year, only 9 of 15 enrolled, another year 17 of 25 enrolled (I’m not 100% sure of the numbers but they are in the ballpark). They don’t care if they have lower enrollment because the medical school will simply admit a few more students when the year comes.

The medical school calculates the average undergraduate (UG) GPA and MCAT for the incoming medical class and the HPM then uses that as the UG GPA and MCAT minimum requirement for the HPM students. The current overall UG GPA minimum required is 3.7, as is the science GPA. The MCAT requirement is 32 (they will publish the new score under the new grading system when they have statistics from incoming classes).

The program allows you to choose between 7 or 8 years total; there is a trend towards 8 years but currently it is 50-50.

The program is binding regarding the reserved seat in medical school; if you want to apply out you’ll need to let them know and you will lose your reserved seat.

Each candidate was given a customized schedule; between 10 am and 12 noon he/she had an interview with a faculty member and a group discussion conducted by current medical school students. That is, half the candidates interviewed first while the other half had the group discussion first. Only the interview is evaluative. If I can use our day as a basis for estimate, that would mean there are up to 11 faculty interviewers and each would interview 7 to 8 students over the 5 interview days and choose their top 1 or 2. Just guessing though.

My daughter said her interview only lasted 40 minutes and she wondered if that is a bad sign. Usual questions about herself and her interests, her patient care experience, what she thinks about medicine, etc. She came out of it a little depressed, feeling that she didn’t do well, and didn’t want to talk about it, so I have not pressed her for additional details.

There was a fair amount of walking to and from the Metrorail and on the campus tours (medical school and UG for parents, UG only for students) so comfortable shoes are a good idea. For the UG tour, which was after the entire group had returned to the Pavia garage via Metrorail, the coordinator told everyone to feel free to go to their cars to change shoes and clothes (e.g., into a T-shirt – guess that would work only for the guys). It was unseasonably hot and humid during our visit.

If there are specifics you’re interested in, feel free to post or send me a message and I’ll be glad to answer whatever I can remember. Best of luck and congrats again to folks going to interviews, and keep your spirits up everyone!

@starlight127, thank you.

Thejerseygirl , Thanks for sharing.
SLCMom, Nice sharing, best wishes to your daughter. Did they say when will you hear from them?

@class1417
Thank you! During the presentation they said they will review though March and will let us know by April 1, I think.

I was worried about my son’s senior grades earlier (which probably does not matter for the programs anyway ), but he worked hard after the new year, and he has done great! Relieved.

@class1417

Thanks SLCMom. Fingers crossed.

has anyone heard from njms through stevens?

SLCMom, thanks a lot for posting your experience on the University of Miami / HPME interview. I have couple of questions for you:

What is the purpose of the group discussion? You indicated that they do not evaluate the group discussion aspect. What kind of topics do they discuss?

Did your daughter appear at the UM singer scholarship interview? If so, could you please share some details on that?

Best wishes to your daughter - hope & pray that she gets admission to UM HPME.
