Hope good news comes soon for all! The old “be careful what you wish for” looms on the horizon… :-?

Dad2013 - Did they only select 37 to interview or 3 of them did not show up?

I don’t know why 37. But all the 37 UT-PACT candidates showed up.

@texaspg Two accepted Mcdermott Scholarship and one informed that he is seriously ill and could not make it. @Dad2013 Looks like your daughter got the acceptance from IVY and you are in favor of UT-PACT. Can you give the reasons. I am in the same boat, Stanford acceptance under early action and waiting for UT-PACT.

Ah-ha, that makes sense for 40-3.
It’s their choice and there is no way to know which could be better. We even didn’t apply for McDermott.

Congrats on the stanford acceptance. I know a kid from Houston who joined PACT last year over Stanford (another did the same same and he was posting on CC). Personally I wouldn’t advise going to PACT over Stanford but it would make sense if you are full pay and expect to make it back to Texas for med school.

So McDermott students can’t join PACT?

@MedAspirant, your question sounds like what UT-PACT interviewers asked. After UT-PACT interview at UTD and UTSW, we are leaning toward to PACT for high ROI(Return of Investment) and better UG life in path to a great medical school over extremely expensive private and prestigious college path. We are not qualified any of need-based FA from private colleges. UT-PACT gave us big impression. Still waiting for other two BSMD results in addition to PACT. I think you’re same as us.

@texaspg, Mcdermott students can not join PACT. I am not eligible for financial aid. My parents do not have any issues in paying for my education if I choose Stanford. My plan is to join a medical school, not necessarily to come back to Texas. My main concern is to get into a top 10 medical school after Stanford graduation. Would it make a difference where I go to medical school when it comes to residency, income etc. I am from Dallas suburb which is about 10 minutes drive to UTD and 20 minutes drive to Medical school, so that I can stay at home. My parents are pretty flexible and take care of most of my chores etc

@MedAspirant, it seems like you already stated that Stanford would be better fit in your aspiration and financial situation. PACT is a binding program and no way for you to be in top 10 medical school. (UTSW is top 25 medical school, though. I think top 25 is good enough for us.) None of top 10 medical schools expect for WashU has BSMD program, FYI.

Although people expect to move onto other top schools for medicine it does not always turn out that way due to the med school costs as well as much harder admission numbers involved. Although Stanford may admit more of their own students, their admit rate currently is at 1.8% for example. Home state plays a huge role in med school admissions since 90% of Texas seats will go instate and so no matter where people go to study, an overwhelming number return home for med school because it is easier for them to get in. So in the parent’s view, the kid would have spent the money going to Stanford only to come back to Baylor or Southwestern so why spend 250k.

Most doctors here would tell you where you get residency has no bearing on where you go to med school. I do hear that is different for someone who wants to get on the faculty.

@Dad2013, Top 10 Vs 25 depends on my question whether the medical school I choose makes any difference when it comes to residency, income etc. Also I am about 15 - 20 minutes drive to both UTD and UTSW which is a huge plus for me.

I don’t believe there is a big difference between top 10 and 25 in medical schools. That’s why we applied for PACT. But I may be wrong since I’m not an MD.
I actually concerned that a top 5 undergraduate college opportunity is removed too early, where good social life-time network with other greatest kids and professors will be built. Why not trust my kid’s potential although she already has proven so far.

@AspireMedicDad when did your daughter hear from NJIT+SGU and how? I have been waiting to hear from them :O

@MedAspirant and @Dad2013, if you want to pursue a career in academic medicine, then it helps tremendously if you graduate from one of the top medical schools. However, if you plan to be predominantly a practicing physician, it does not matter where you go for your medical school, as long as you get good USMLE scores and also be preferably in an institution where the residency or fellowship program you are interested in are offered. It is always a lot easier to be matched into the program of your own medical school.

Is Top 25 good enough for academic medical career if want ?

UTSW is a very respected medical school. It is one of the medical schools that has many Nobel Prize laureates. But obviously at the end of the day, you cannot just rely on the name of the medical school to carry your career forward. You need to prove your worth.

Just rejected from Stony Brook. Totally bummed cuz it’s not only my state school but also my top choice, and I was (foolishly) kinda expecting an interview. I guess I have other options though. Good luck to everyone else!

Edit: I was notified by snail mail.

@minion17, My D got NJIT+SGU admission letter on Feb 14th through an email followed by snail mail. The letter came from NJIT office signed by the NJIT interim Dean and SGU Program Director.

I am surprised to hear UT-PACT is binding. How does the binding work?

“Is Top 25 good enough for academic medical career if want ?”

There are many foreign medical graduates who are part of the faculty even at some of the top medical schools in the nation. The problem usually is in cracking the top schools academia because they try to recruit from their peers. Once someone is proven like IMGDAD, they have no issues being recruited anyway.

starlight - sorry to hear about Stony Brook.

I used a wrong word. I meant UT-PACT students would lose the UTSW’s guaranteed spot if they apply for other medical schools. UT-PACT advisers are willing to write recommendation letters to other medical schools but cannot keep the spot. Sorry for confusion.
