It’s the usual school email quarantine delay…admitted to Northwestern! Thanks again @WelsCool, Good luck for HPME! And anyone else also waiting.

Congrats also to folks who got recent acceptances and hang in there the rest of us!

@SLCMom it is so surprising that your daughter had all those other rejections but she is admitted to NU. Getting into NU is no easy task so her credentials must be stellar. I am no longer going to try to figure any of this out. Chance me threads are a waste of time.

Advice please everyone.

Our first choice is of course a combined program, but we are realistic that our chances are low. Back up would be to attend Northwestern as a regular undergraduate or Washington University at St. Louis as a regular undergraduate. Both colleges are wonderful. Goal is still medical school and research, so premed advising and support would be key. As mentioned before, daughter’s personality is laid back (not in your face competitive). Ignoring weather/location/cost factors for now, does anyone have feedback/advice regarding the choice of one of these over the other? Appreciate it!

P.S. Reason to start thinking now is because we need to decide by Monday March 24 whether to visit WUSTL for the Multicultural Weekend, which conflicts with daughter’s audition for an honors piano recital (we have visited Northwestern) so daughter is trying to gather more information. Unfortunately the other weekends won’t work for a visit. Oh the joy of scheduling three busy individuals!

Thanks in advance everyone.

Thanks!

@SLCMom, Congrats on NU admission. If this was my DS situation, I would have him visit WUSTL Multicultural weekend if that is the only weekend available. I recall from my DS’s invitation that the trip is paid for and the students will be provided many opportunity to get to know the school. Most posters on cc had great things to say about their visit. My family really liked WUSTL and would love for DS to attend the school if not for that he has a scholarship offer from another school.

@SLCMom I would say that for premed, WUSTL might be better for your daughter. Not that NU isn’t laidback, but WUSTL is really so, and they are generally known as a good premed school with awesome research opportunities. I also had to decide about Multicultural Weekend, but ultimately decided not to attend - they did say that they would send any sort of plane ticket to you if you give 2 weeks notification, so even if Multicultural Weekend is out, you can visit any time on their expense.

Also, if your daughter is laid-back, are you sure HPME would be a good program for her? I had the impression (wrong, right, it’s just my humble opinion) that most HPME kids are somewhat aggressive in their studies (not necessarily competitive, just big go-getters)

@slcMom My son did not get admission to Northwestern and he is wait listed at WUSTL. According to my elder son who is now at Baylor college of medicine and was a rice/Baylor medical scholar, WUSTL has one of the best reputations for premed. Everything else being equal, I would suggest WUSL, even though my younger son is on waitlist.

@nexus55 wow your son was a Rice/Baylor student? I am so jealous! I sort of messed up my application to them, so I hope it doesn’t change anything… and I concur with your opinion of WUSTL. Sorry for your younger son - he will end up where he belongs in the end!

Thanks!

one thing you need to be aware though, Wash U requires pretty high MCAT score to move forward to medical school part, even though your child is the university scholar; while HPME doesn’t require MCAT score.

Also, WUSTL’s Med Scholars requires a 3.8 GPA while HPME only needs 3.2. With the sort of stats to stay in the WUSTL program, you could potentially get into any top med school, not just WUSTL.

totally agree with your numbers @WelsCool

Thanks! Maybe “laid back” is the wrong word…daughter is hardworking and loves learning, her experiences volunteering and shadowing, and research probably most of all, but she does not care about being number 1 (or 2 or 3 etc. - ranking or prestige or fame or fortune is just not that important to her, if you know what I mean). Likes working together with like-minded folks - one of the reasons she loves her research lab so much. We think a combined program will allow her to focus more on learning and research than the medical school application. But it is a very long shot for her.

Thanks! Unfortunately, daughter did not receive invitation for interview for either Northwestern HPME or WUSTL University Scholars Program, so this is just choosing between the regular undergraduate college for premed. She doesn’t care which medical school - she knows there are differences obviously but for her purpose, she thinks all of them will train her well!

I have been to both campuses and they are both beautiful but I liked the WUSTL better. But campus shouldn’t be the deciding factor. I have spoken to premed students from WUSTL and they said it was brutal and also that if you don’t have the grades that the school expects that they hinder you from applying by not providing any recommendations. They are told to improve their stats and try again later. Knowing what we know about chances into medicine I don’t like how an UG advising department prescreens their students.

NU is more of an engineering school - I really don’t have any information about their premed program. Their engineers though all start at extremely high salaries. I met a whole group of students from there who had full time jobs lined up by the end of their junior year starting at over 100K. Companies gobble these students up early.

Good luck with the decision but if you can’t make up your mind now it means you need more information. She should go on the campus visit.

Oh by the way, don’t look at each school’s med school. They don’t necessarily prefer their own students.

Thanks!

This is not related to the topics we are talking about: but I was shocked to read this just now: an article from April, 2013 … what the …

EVANSTON — Hundreds of waitlisted students stood outside Norris University Center on Monday, peering through the windows to catch glimpses of the Wildcat Days Activities Fair and other information sessions. Suddenly, Justin Star, a New Trier senior, felt a tap on his shoulder.

“Justin Stein wasn’t impressed by the food at Hinman and isn’t going here,” an Admissions Officer told him. “So you’re in.” Star rushed inside Norris.

Not all waitlisted students were as lucky as Star. For most, they had to go to the scheduled waitlisted events, the most exciting of which was an activities fair that only featured Syllabus Yearbook, service fraternities, and Clash of the Tritones a capella.

“We tried to book the Sailing Team Appreciation Club, but they didn’t want to bother,” said Dean of Admissions Caitlin Smith. “The men’s basketball team, however, should be here for next Monday’s Waitlist Wildcat Day. They’re pretty desperate.”

Waitlisted students also got to sample the leftover sandwiches from the plastic lunches admitted students received, a tour of Kresge, and a complimentary shuttle to the University of Michigan.

My S was just accepted to Hofstra’s 4+4 B.S/M.D Medical Program!

Congrats !!
