BS/MD Programs Chance???

Hi everyone,

First off, please disregard my username. I made this account as a sophomore, but I am currently heading into my senior year (a fact that I'm still struggling to wrap my mind around). Throughout high school, I have been extremely interested in pursuing my dream and passion in medicine and my ultimate goal is to be accepted into at least one of the highly selective BS/MD programs out there. I have stalked quite a number of threads over the past year and it has been so incredibly helpful. I hope you can take a look at my stats and give me an honest opinion for where I stand (especially since most of the programs I'm considering are fairly high-tier ones). I would especially appreciate it if anyone who has been accepted into BS/MD programs or anyone currently in one can take some time and give his/her input. Thanks in advance! :)

Programs I plan to apply to:
Brown PLME, Northwestern HPME, Rochester REMS, BU SMED, Case PPSP, Pitt GAP, RPI/AMC, Villanova/Drexel, UConn, George Washington, Miami HPME, Rice, Baylor

Class Rank: N/A (but certainly within top 2%)
Unweighted GPA: 3.99/4.00
Weighted GPA: N/A

State: NY
Ethnicity: Asian (Chinese)

SAT: 2360 (one sitting), 2380 (superscore)
Math: 800; Critical Reading 770 ; Writing 790

ACT: N/A

SAT II:
Math Level 2: 800
Chemistry: 800
Biology: 800

AP's (at the time of application to BS/MD programs):
Biology: 5
World History: 5
Physics B: 4***
Chemistry: 4***
English Language and Composition: 5
Statistics: 5
APUSH: 5

Seniors Year AP's:
Calculus BC
Spanish
Physics C
Computer Science
Macro & Microeconomics
Psychology
Literature

Major EC's:
Speech and Debate Team- Founder/Co-captain
Newspaper- Editor-in-Chief
Model UN- Undersecretary General
Science Olympiad- Vice President
Envirothon- State Competitor
Music (Violin): Appeared as soloist in multiple international music festivals; multiple awards/solo appearances with orchestras; selected into Conference All-State as junior; etc.

Awards:
American Chemical Society Award (Awarded to top 10% of chemistry students)
George Eastman Young Leaders Award
Cornell Essay Competition Finalist
There are more but these three are probably the most significant.

Medicine-Related Activities:
Hospital Volunteering- 180+ Hours
Lab Research- 35 Hours (will probably get more this summer)
Shadowing- 16 Hours (will definitely be getting more- I will probably have at least 50 or 60 hours by the end of the summer)
Pathology Program at local university- Student Leader- Approx. 1-2 hours every week for the entire year (I've been in the program for about two years now)
Pathology (Statistical/Data) Research- 120 Hours (will end up with more)

***Of all my standardized test scores/objective statistics, I think these two 4's (on chemistry and physics B) are my low points. I was not particularly surprised with my score on the physics AP because I had struggled all year, but I was completely shocked with my chemistry score. Throughout the year, my chemistry grade was consistently in the top 2 or 3 of my class, so I was fairly confident with how I would do on the AP, but unfortunately it didn't quite play out as I expected. I think my SAT II Chemistry score will better attest to my competency in chemistry. However, will these two 4's affect my standings at these programs where basically everyone is applying with perfect scores?

Would you be willing to attend these schools as a regular student?

For most of these schools- absolutely! I really do love many of the undergrads just by themselves for these programs.

BSc/MD programs are always reaches for anyone. Therefore the chances are for attendance as a regular student. You can always try Brown Alpert, NWU for traditional med school if you cannot get into any BSc/MD program.

Brown: Reach
NWU: Reach
U Rochester: Match
UConn: Safety
GWU: Match
Baylor: Safety
Rice: Reach
Villanova: Low match (for some reason Villanova seems to favor Asian kids)
BU: Low match
Case Western: Low match/Match
UPitt: Safety
RPI: Safety
U Miami: Low match/Match

IMO, most of these BS/MD programs are high reaches. I just don’t see the passion for medicine as a huge portion of the EC’s seem to be humanities and music related. Your grade grubbing and worrying about minuscule imperfections like those AP scores will likely shine through your application as well, although I’m speculating that low scores on relatively core sciences like physics and chemistry could hurt you. I’d agree with the above poster on your chances to these schools except I’d make Brown a reach instead of a low reach. Looks like you have good course rigor (max AP’s) and grades so of course you’ll still have a chance. Maybe take the physics subject test if possible.

Also try to publish research if you can, this is becoming increasingly important for BS/MD programs.

Thanks Catria and Scioly1997! But Scioly1997- in regards to the AP scores, I’ve been told by many of my friends that colleges hardly consider them except for credit. Is that true?

Some lower tier programs will become reach as well if you don’t show enough interest in their programs. Therefore, try to visit them during the summer if you can, and open and forward all of their e-mails to your parents as well. I would add Williams College as one of non-BS/MD programs. I would also add Penn St/Jefferson and Drew/NJMC. It would come down to how well you express yourself on your essays and interview. Your non-science/medicine portion of your application would become important in top tier programs so don’t be afraid to highlight your interest in them.

everything looks great, but all the ones u r applying to are very tough to get into. i advise u to apply to some of the ones with SUNY, CUNY, etc. that r only for New Yorkers, just to have some backups. but u should get into at least one of the programs u mentioned as long as essays r good and interview goes well.
