BS/MD Programs within my reach??!

Hi, I'm a junior right now living in Ohio. I'd like to pursue a career in medicine and feel like the best shot I would have would be to get into a BS/MD program. I know of all the opportunities in Ohio for BS/MD. I have researched them and I feel like I am only below average compared to the students getting into NEOUCOM.

Here are some of the things I have on my resume:

Weighted GPA:4.3
Unweighted GPA: 3.8
ACT:33 composite (I am studying all summer to get it up to a 36)
English: 35
Math: 35
Reading: 35
Science: 28 [Look's bad that I'm going for a career in science doesn't it :/]
Rank: Top 3%, Number 8-15 out of 600-700

4 AP's Taken
3 More taking next year

EC's:
NHS 1 year
Mu Alpha Theta 1 year
Math Club 2 years
Marching Band 4 years (possible drum major)
Track 3 years (Varsity 1 year)
150+ hours in Volunteer for Southwest General
Looking to shadow many doctors this summer
Doing a research/shadow for a respected cancer researcher in the summer

I feel as if my resume is very week as I do not have many awards/EC's/officer positions. What would be in reach for me right now and also if I did get a 35/36 on my ACT?

Is there anything I can do to strengthen my resume? Thanks!!

What can your parents afford? Look at this thread for guaranteed merit aid: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html?highlight=guaranteed</a> You should be competitive for most/all of it.

Basically I am going to pay my way. Bump anyone?

Rutgers 7 year MD program with UMDNJ.

If you’re going to pay your own way then you should probably stay in-state or look at guaranteed scholarships. http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/financial-aid-scholarships/848226-important-links-automatic-guaranteed-merit-scholarships.html?highlight=guaranteed</a></p>

I think you need a great letter of recommendation related to your medical volunteer work, and some experience that allows you to write a killer essay.

Spend the summer volunteering for Hospice/Red Cross/AIDS clinic/Senior Center/free clinic. Drive folks to their doctor’s appointments, help them get their prescriptions, take them to apply for Medicaid or Food Stamps. Get involved. The head of Hospice or AIDS clinic or whatever will sing your praises for being so caring to the underserved folks. Shadowing doctors is very passive, and hard to arrange in this HIPPA-driven world. Doing research for a respected cancer doc, is fine if you really can arrange it, but will it really give you that stand-out letter of rec?

There is absolutely nothing wrong with your resume (well, you could bring up your science score on ACT- read the posts on ACT). What you want to show is leadership and self-starting. You can do that with the right volunteer work this summer

I was thinking of starting a Red Cross Club and trying to volunteer for a southwest general hospice. Would that be a good start 2bizee?

I know someone with way worse stats and ECs who got into NEOUCOM. But they did ask her why her science ACT was so low…
