Decision: Stony Brook University Engineering Scholars for Medicine BE/MD Eight Year Program!

Reflection: I joined CC back in January because of the wealth of information I was gleaning from this thread and about BS/MD programs in general. Applying to these programs requires a certain type of person, one who not only knows they want to go into medicine, but who can prove it through well-written essays, fantastic recommendations, and, at the interview stage, the ability to speak professionally and clearly and to convey ideas with finesse. As I have seen throughout this process, written and spoken communication skills can sometimes outweigh weaknesses in an application. I don’t have the best scores in the world, I have zero research (though I am definitely looking forward to fixing that next year), and I honestly only participate in one health related activity, the ambulance corps. I didn’t realize I wanted to apply to these programs until mid-Junior year, so I had already lost some time trying to “build up a resume” specifically for BS/MD programs. In the end, though, having all of those experiences didn’t really matter. I believe the admissions committees liked my commitment to my school activities, my volunteering efforts, and the ambulance corps as a whole over a larger period of time, as compared to shorter experiences in shadowing. Either way, I am extremely grateful for all of the help I have received here on CC, and I am unbelievably happy to have a seat in Stony Brook School of Medicine’s Class of 2021! If anybody who is applying next year has any questions, feel free to PM me, I’ll be happy to help!

@TheBombingRange, thank you for your detailed stats in post #82. Congrtulations to your many acceptances and your great choice!

Just a thought - I applied to relatively unknown bs/md programs so I’d have less competition.

Reflection: I think the biggest lesson i’d pass on to other applicants is that you don’t have to get the “best” scores or highest grades to get into bs/md programs. Like a lot of my friends on here say, it’s about being well-rounded. I may not look the best on paper, but I was able to express my genuine love of medicine and teaching, caring, and motivating others while at interviews. I showed that I was interested in not only clinical medicine, but also research. I was also careful to show specific interests in different interviews. Sometimes when I was with a group of interviewees, others would make faces at me because i’d strike up a conversation while everyone waited their turn to interview, but that’s when I learned that being outgoing and social in those situations actually helps you, it makes you stand out and be heard. Also, the more the better. Yeah, everyone said I was ridiculous for applying for this many programs, but hey, I had completed nearly 15 interviews (UG and Med Schools) before march. so when I walked into the drexel and WV med interviews, I was so confident! And THAT is the key. Not over confidence, but confidence that proves that you are willing to do ANYTHING to show the admissions officers that you can be a successful student in medicine. Additionally, I’d like to add that I got most of my offers from in-state med schools! Coincidence? Maybe, maybe not, but they seemed to like me a lot more. The OOS state interviews were much harder. And as far as choosing a school, I didn’t chose it based on prestige only because…
I know I want to be a doctor. I will become a doctor, not matter what now. I do not care where I go for med school or residency because that’s not what’s going to get me a job - I didn’t get into these bs/md’s because of where I went to school (I live in a small rural town <20,000 pop, public school), it’s because I worked hard at standing out. And sometimes standing out at a smaller school is easier than a bigger one. I don’t mind taking the MCATs, it’s just like I didn’t mind taking the ACTs. All I care about is being able to have a full, well-rounded, free undergraduate life. At more competitive schools with higher expectations (I’m required to have a 3.5 GPA), I may feel stressed or overwhelmed (that’s just me, other smarter people may breeze by, but I know my limits). That’s why I chose a place where I can be among the best and show the world who I am. I have an internship and rotation already waiting for me from being in the bs/md program. To those who say that having a challenge is better, sure, but it’s not for me. I know who I am and what I can handle and I feel that medical school, no matter where I go, will provide me with that challenge. Meanwhile, I’ll kick back and relax with little to no requirements or competition in my undergrad years :)

Feel free to message me if you have an questions 2014ers!

@Butterfli123, I assume that you got at least a full tuition scholarship from Pitt when selected for GAP. What was your reasoning for selecting Morris/Drexel instead of Pitt GAP which has such a great Med School?

Curious also…Pitt is BIG TIME…the real deal !!!

Butterfli - Can you please confirm- Pitt GAP needs minimum SAT 1450, you have 1360 (C+M) and was offered a seat? Why did you select SB over Pitt? Thanks.

@jand @tropixx actually, since my scores were so low that i only got $5000 from pitt. it would actually cost me a LOT more to go there.
@yesdee yup, i moved through every stage without even meeting the minimum requirements. I guess they saw something else in me. As for the second part of your question, what is the SB you are referring to?

There is a 33 requirement for ACT. Is it possible that the numbers with writing add up to 33?

Oops… I thought you decided to join Stony Brook. I meant to say Drexel. Congratulations on your selection.

Well, no. The ACT composite score is based on the 4 core sections, with writing as an optional section. It is the average of the 4 core sections that is given on their website. I called and asked about this before I applied…the lady said “I mean, sure, why not! You can go ahead and apply, just to see what happens!”

@yesdee I chose drexel because i get to be free and comfortable for my undergrad years, instead of the stress of a 3.75 @pitt

For curiosity, why Robert Morris over any other Drexel program? They have an internship and rotation already lined up? What are you majoring in at Robert Morris? Did you apply to any non-program schools?

Congrats butterfli - I agree, stress for 3.75 at pitt is not worth it

I think butterfli is saying it Robert Morris is free or almost for undergrad. She mentions Drexel but I don’t believe their med school is free.

HPMEMOM - Can you post your son’s stats.

@teaxspg
I think HPEMOM already did in one of the other threads, I think.

We need it here!

@HPEMOM and texaspg

May be I am wrong about the posting for HPEMOM’s son’s stats.

She is very active on this thread and CC. I am sure she will post it.

It will be nice to see it in the results thread, especially since he has had multiple BS/MD [almost all] acceptances.

Decision: Emory

Reflection: This whole process is just so bizzare. Everything happens for a reason. IMO, I don’t think BS/MD programs like dual enrollment classes, even though I was enrolled in a 4 year ranked university.

@TheBombingRange I chose RMU because i received the full scholarship there, whereas other drexel programs only gave me about 1/2 - 3/4 scholarship. Yes, as part of the bs/md program, I have an internship during my 3+4th year of UG at Allegheny General Hospital. And, I come back to AGH for at least one of my 3rd or 4th year rotations and can add on as many more rotations as I’d like at AGH.

I’m a Biology major with a pre-med concentration. I didn’t apply to any other non-program schools, only bs/md.
