BSc ChemE + BSc Chem or BSc ChemE only?

Hi. I am currently a senior majoring in chemistry. I only need to complete 6 more classes to obtain my BSc degree in chemistry. I decided to pursue a degree in chemical engineering.

Do you guys think it would be worth the time (extra semester) and money ($~10,000 more) to complete my degree in chemistry?

Thank you for your time and input.

Your post is a bit confusing.

At present, you are a chemistry major, but you’re thinking of switching to ChE?

If so, does it make sense to spend an extra semester or longer at college for a double major?

I think that you are asking the following question

I’m a senior in Chemistry, I’m switching to ChemE no matter what. I know it will take me extra time to finish. Even then, I would only be a semester short of getting the Chemistry degree too. Is it worth it? Great question!

When investigating ChemE schools for D, I noticed that some schools (Wisconsin, Delaware) made it really easy to double major and some seemed like it would require extra time.

What was not discussed was what the actual benefit of having that double major would be. In other words, you probably have Chemistry beyond that required for the ChemE degree. Given the ChemE degree, how much more valuable are the few extra courses that you would need to complete the BS in Chemistry. You already get the benefit of any extra chemistry classes that you may have taken (analytical, biochemistry, etc).

I would ask some ChemE professors at your school what kind of potential benefits there would be in completing the Chemistry degree.

I suspect not much in an industrial processing job, but perhaps some if you were to pursue a more academic path.

However, it’s not my area, so I don’t want to steer you wrong.

Yep thats it. I can do ChemE only and finish in 6 semesters or do ChemE + Chem and finish in 7 semesters + ~$10,000 more.

Be sure to check issues of rourse sequencing and semester-offered. Even if you only need an extra semester’s woth of credit, you still may need to stay longer.
