Hi guys Didn’t see any other posts about this, sorry if I messed up!

Does anyone have experience with the bachelor of theatre arts (“BTA”) degree? From what I read on the website, it seems extremely cool and the type of thing I would enjoy, but I like to get personal opinions.

I’ve always loved UM’s musical theatre program, but recently have decided I probably do not want to pursue a BFA in MT - I’m leaning towards a BA in theatre with a double major or minor in education. So I’m on a hunt for schools with a strong theatre department that are also academically strong :)

I'm a BTA! The program has its ups and downs. Since you're an SMTD student, you get a lot more privilege than you would as an LSA student in terms of being able to take SMTD classes. There are still limitations, though; for instance, many of the theatre classes give priority to BFAs (understandably), and nearly all of the musical theatre classes are completely closed to non-majors. Generally, you'll be able to get into the theatre class you want, but it takes luck and initiative. As for MT, you can still take History of Musical Theatre and some of their dance classes, but Musical Theatre Performance is only for MTs.

In my opinion, the BTA program's strength is its flexibility. It's the easiest of the SMTD degrees to dual-major with (which, don't get me wrong, is still a pain), and you can basically fashion it to emphasize any discipline you're interested in--playwriting, dramaturgy, theatre management, etc. I decided to go with it because I know I love theatre, but I don't see myself as a professional actor for a lot of reasons, so I want to expand my horizons within the field. And, as I understand it, the BTA is mainly intended for people who want to follow the academic route of theatre and teach, so if you're looking into education, it should be a good fit for you.
