BU Acceptance percentage high?+ other random questions

Is their acceptance percentage high because so many people choose BU as a safety school?
What is BU’s acceptance percentage?
Is BU full of rich kids?
Does BU offer good financial aid?
Does BU have a good undergraduate business program?

business - yes
financial aid - no, but good merit scholarships
acceptance rate - around 50%
full of rich kids? - more than other schools because it is so expensive and doesn't offer good financial aid because of a relatively low endowment
acceptance percentage high? - BU is a big school and this affects their percentage accepted more than anything as they have more spots to fill, but it is still an Ivy safety

Does BU have a pre-med program?

BU does actually give a LOT of financial aid. Everyone I know here is on aid or scholarship...and the kids who got grants are REALLY happy with it. I know a bunch of kids that turned down NYU because they give close to nothing and BU gave them almost full tuition.

I don't know anything about the premed program but I'm assuming it's really good because it's really popular. There are like 4 specialty floors for it.

Is BU business better than Penn State business (Smeal)?

Can't say any school is BETTER than the other---its really about the best fit. Both are top schools so it may come down to the enviroment of Boston vs. PSU.

How are the "rich kids" like? Are they all girls who carry LV and wear Tiffany's jewelry and are kind of dumb?

i visited a friend at BU and saw very few "rich kids"....more potheads than "rich kids"

i think thats just because of the kid you were with

Chrisso there are rich kids at every private school with a price tag north of $40K.

I know...that's why I was disagreing with the idea that there are more pot heads than rich kids. I wish that was the case.

Its a huge school. There are plenty of rich kids, poor kids, and pot heads!

Keep in mind that a school with 500 Freshman slots needs 1,000 "qualified" applicants for a 50% acceptance rate while a school with 3,000 slots needs 6,000 so a 50% rate at a huge school can't be compared to a smaller one since that is a lot of kids. For 2,500 more kids to be interested in that larger school--while only1,000 might be for the smaller school---well that says a lot about the school's popularity (for lack of a better term).

Some schools within BU are more competetive than others so there will be differences in stats and acceptance rates for CGS, the 7 yr Med. Program, SMG, Hospitality, etc.

^ do you know how the acceptance rate is for SMG?

Unfortunately, they won't release specific statistics about acceptance into the individual schools (besides 7 year BA/MD) because they need to base their admissions decisions on which program you're going to actually pursue, not just put down on your application and then transfer to another program once you enroll.

Good point, A. I think it would be safe to say that SMG is more competetive stats wise then say hospitality. I hear the Biomedical Engineering is ranked in the top 10 and very competetive. I suppose it all boils down to how many spots they have and CAS being the largest college has the most.

BU's 2009 class profile, students attending not just admitted which of course would be higher, has 1270-1410 / 27-31 for mid range so 25% of kids are over that and 25% are under. However, CGS is available for kids that don't meet that criteria (mid range of CGS is 1130-1240) so a school like BU can have a skewed acceptance rate with CGS. This is what makes it weird since PR includes the CGS range for the averages so it looks like a safety for some when in fact the average SAT is 1340 of kids attending, obviously higher for those offered admissions.

U of Delaware provides general stats then pulls out the Honors Program on their admissions web site and suddenly that group has stats comparable to many Ivy League schools. I assume that is also true for other Honors Programs. Has anyone seen stats for BU's Honors Program?

This is what someone from BU who I know had to say about why BU has a high acceptance rate and all:

Our college of arts and sciences and various departments are all among the top 5, but the university itself is ranked in the fifties because of the College of General Studies. Basically, if you're not good for one of the "real" colleges, BU will still take you in and put you through CGS for two years. At the end of those two years, if you make that, you'll have completed your GED requirements and can go on to any major in any of the real colleges. You still graduate from BU in four years.
This means more money from BU and more scholarships for real students, but it also means an unnaturally high acceptance rate.

That is very true. The actual schools at BU, especially COM and SMG, are a lot more selective than BU as a whole. They told my class (COM c/o 2009) that the acceptance rate for COM was 1 in 7.

wait...so if i applied to SMG and my stats are :

1350/1980
3.84 UW
28/822

im confused on my chances....??.....lol im really scared now
