BU CAS vs. Case Western Reserve U. CAS

Hello. I am from OH and unfortunately I was rejected from my top choice school so now I am left with BU and Case. I have complied a pro/con list of my concerns and I apologize, in advance, if I rub anyone the wrong way from this list, that is not my intention.

Boston U.
pros–> got into CAS with reasonable scholarship, it’s in a metropolitan area, and economics is included in CAS
cons–> there is an honors college at BU so I am reminded that I should’ve gotten better stats to have been considered and there are more “pretigious” universities in the vicinity, ex. MIT, HARVARD, Boston College, Tufts, etc. (I only applied to Tufts though)

Case Western Reserve U.
pros–> there’s no honors college so all students start off on the same tier, it’s near home so if I need laundry done or get tired of campus food I can go home, top 50 universities in the country, and there are no other colleges in the area to rub in my face
cons–> not much school spirit, homework load rivals that of MIT for #1 spot, economics is not a part of CAS so I have to choose from statistics, poly sci., or international relations, and it’s in Cleveland, a dying city, I have to make a scholarship appeal (my 3rd qtr. grades are waaaaaay better than my mid-year report, which sucks because colleges have already sent out final decisions)

Ranking wise BU is #61 and Case is #41 based on USNews 2007

Regardless of where I go I plan to transfer after completing my first two years and requirements, hopefully I have the grades to transfer out.

I plan on visiting BU in mid-april for admitted students day so my opinions may change, but we’ll see. For now I would like a second opinion.

Thank you.

I think it’s a bad idea to start anywhere with the intention of transferring after two years.

I understand that notion. But I’m just putting all my intentions out there, I’ve put everything on my mind out there. Who knows I may end up going to BU, love it, and stay all four years or I may end up going to Case, love it, and stay all four years. But I just put everything out there on the table because at least all of you that respond are aware of the plans.

If you’re planning on transferring anyway I would just go where ever you get the best money and where ever your major is offered.

I’m going to say something you might not want to hear. You tell us you didn’t do well enough to get into BU honors, that you didn’t get into your top choices, that you want to transfer, etc. Try picking a school you like and afford and then DOING WELL there. Your post makes me wonder if you’re one of those people who plans a lot without understanding the adage, “If you want to make God laugh, make plans.” You don’t actually get anywhere by planning like that. You get somewhere by picking a school that you like and can afford and doing well. kinshasa is dead on: go somewhere with your plans in mind and you won’t be focused on what you’re actually doing.

That’s the thing though. I didn’t get into a school I liked. The one’s that are left are all I have. I just posted to get feedback on BU or Case. I know it’s not the most positive statement to say that I’m going to transfer, but really that’s my intent. I just want to know, BU OR CASE? That’s all I’m asking. I understand that thinking about trasferring this early is not productive, but that’s my plan because I don’t see myself happy at either school for the aforementioned reasons. My ticket out is my motivation to do well and for some that’s enough to do it. My plans may change, but I’m just putting it out there. So all I ask is BU OR CASE? (An explation would be appreciated too.)

I’d say BU, but since I live in Boston and am considering it myself, I am slightly biased in this case.

You might grow to like the school you attend. Nothing is certain.

i would post this in the case western forum if they have one b/c the majority of the people will tell you BU, especially since most of us don’t know anything about case western

Thanks for the suggestion.

Also, don’t take BU honors into account. It’s really not that great or prestigious of a program. The new honors college they’re currently creating will be, but to be honest the CAS Honors prog is kinda lame. You just take 4 classes with an honors section. That’s it. It doesn’t show up on your diploma. And honors kids are in the same lectures as you. They just have a different discussion section. So no one will rub it in your face. The other schools around won’t either.

If it helps, I’m from OH and I love love love BU. There is tremendous opportunity here to really make the most of college and as Lergnom said, do well and make plans. I’m SO glad I chose to come here and I’ve never looked back (was between here and OSU).

you can also take honors courses without being in the honors program. you just have to have a certain gpa and a teacher/advisor rec i believe (my friend took honors bio and it was, apparently, easier than the regular bio course).

I am from boston, and i would go to case if you are doing any sciences, because case is well reputated, and they are both near the city, although Boston is a better city, case has a far better rep in terms of academics.
