I know this topic has been previously covered and I’ve read those threads. However, if anybody has any additional insight - I’m a prospective Communication/English double major - I’d appreciate it! I was accepted to NEU EA with merit aid and have also applied to BU regular decision.

The big difference between Northeastern and BU is that once you have passed your Freshmen year at Northeastern, you seem to be in school full-time- no traditional vacation time. This is because you have to schedule your coops, your volunteer/internships in with your course load. BU has the traditional two semester and summers off to find your own work/research/travel. BU has a better campus/nicer location and much more school spirit. As my son said after visiting both schools, if I really knew what I wanted to do and he really wanted to be on the fast/career track, he would choose Northeastern. However, he felt that he would receive the same if not better quality education at BU, enjoy a traditional college life and he definitely liked the campus at BU better. The one plus about Northeastern is that the campus is contained in a smaller area while BU runs along much of Commonwealth Avenue. Northeastern has no “green space.” BU runs along the Esplanade/Charles River which is very pretty.

thanks MACLASS, those were my impressions too, but I wasn’t sure BU had more of a traditional college life and school spirit. Good to know that it does.

I applied to Northeastern but not BU, however I only visited BU. I have to disagree with the above poster- BU doesn’t have much green space. It’s basically a bunch of buildings on a street. I didn’t like that there was no “defined” campus, but that is just me. BU, from what I’ve researched, also suffers from a grade deflation policy, which may not be too bad if you go into the humanities but can severely hurt you if you go into the sciences or are pre-med. BU definitely has more school spirit. BU also is known for offering a more “well-rounded” education. However, you could have a well-rounded education at northeastern if you want to. I usually don’t understand why people compare BU and Northeastern because they are completely different schools- the only reason visited BU was because I was on a field trip and subsequently researched it for my close friend who is applying.

While BU does not have the traditional college green space, it is located along the Charles River and has the Esplanade. A great place to run, walk and hike on a gorgeous day and the views of sailboats, crew teams and boating along the views are awesome!

I have been a student at both though one for undergrad, the other for grad. I can see why people compare them. They are similar in size, in the same city and similarly ranked. I feel that Northeastern has more of a central campus with green space. It is more compact so has more of a campus feel. I like the location of BU better. Because of the river it feels less locked in in the city. I lived on Bay State Road, which is beautiful.

As another person said, the coop program at Northeastern makes the experience different at the two schools. Otherwise there are a lot of stimilarities, and if you want to be at a large school in Boston, it makes sense to consider both.

Can I get some updated opinions about BU vs Northeastern / overall / Engineering / campus? Need to make a decision. Also got accepted to BC but no Engineering. Not sure what to do there.
Thanks
Yeah, there’s some strong misinformation here. Based on my research and experience (as a student at one, looking at both in the application process, visiting both, spending time in both areas as a student in Boston)
Green Space: NEU > BU
College Campus Feel: NEU > BC
Traditional College Experience: BU > NEU
Location: BU > NEU
NEU: co-op, specialization
BU: Generalization, balanced education
At NEU, you won’t be home but you will not be in school all the time either. Co-op is 6 months of work in your field with NO classes at all.
Edit: Sorry, didn’t see this was a 2 year old thread, the above poster has been bumping them up.
