I am a freshman in Connecticut who felt morally obligated to attend a university near home. Though it has gained a considerable reputation, it’s not the best fit for me as a psychology major. I have experienced problems with tolerance of diversity on this campus, though it claims to be an accepting environment. I’m very interested in transferring, but am worried I’ll make the same mistake twice. In an attempt to avoid this, I’d like to know how LGBTQ+ and ethnically friendly students perceive this university to be. I understand I will face discrimination no matter where I go, and am asking more for respect and tolerance, not acceptance. I was raised in a diverse mid-sized “college-town” city and I experienced a great culture shock in this environment only a city away where most students came from Catholic private schools and suburbs that hardly had any interaction with POC (this institution has no religious affiliation, but most students are Catholic.) I’d like to be assured that I won’t hear blatantly racist comments as often as I have in my time here, and that I might feel safe if I were to make this my home for the next three years. I have heard BU students are apathetic and snobby, but I’d like to open the floor to more up-to-date opinions and experiences.
