BU (film) vs. Davidson vs. DePauw vs. KU (architecture) vs. Webster (full tuition) vs. UCLA (OOS debt)

As an update, I called BU and told them I would commit if they could match Davidson’s price, and they did not respond favorably. That price is not changing.

Yes - they’re a rich kid school - 40% received need based aid - unfortunately many of the “name brands” are like that.

I’m still not sure why KU is not a finalist - they had to offer you merit aid.

Well you have a day - good luck.

Many people here were certain KU isn’t a good idea because it’s a large commitment to becoming an architect when I’m not 100% sure and it won’t allow me the opportunity to explore due to the nature of the university and rigor of the program. It also seems like it would be difficult to get involved in music and theater there given the size of the school and number of people (some being music and theater majors) competing for the same positions. I like KU’s architecture program a lot, but if I decided I wanted to do something else, I would transfer schools because I don’t particularly like the rest of KU all that much (I say this having visited 4 times for 4 different programs). Their film program also isn’t particularly amazing.

Where you are missing my friend is, you and not your school, is what’s going to bring you success in life.

If you’re a winner, you’ll win from anywhere.

If you’re not, you’re going to struggle from anywhere.

OK - thanks for engaging…good luck.

Ok, I’m going to go backwards a step. What was it that you didn’t care for about Webster, apart from the fact that it’s in your hometown? They’re giving you a full tuition scholarship and the major in Film, Television and Video Production seems right up your alley and there are several other nearby majors that might peak your interest if things veer in a different direction, like Interactive Digital Media and Media Production, among many others. There’s this thread about going to college in your own hometown that might give you some ideas about how others have handled that very situation: Going to college in one's own hometown?. And should you switch to architecture, the savings from tuition could then be used toward that.

After going through the courses in the different departments at the three liberal arts schools and looking through Webster’s program, I really can’t see why you would want to go into such big debt for BU’s program.

What do you guys think of Loyola Chicago for my aforementioned interests. It’s the same price as BU rn but I could try calling them and telling them I’d commit if they matched Davidson’s price. I haven’t been able to do enough research at this moment, so I’m hoping others can help here.

I don’t think I would enjoy myself at Webster. The art programs are good, I’m sure, but I don’t think I would fit in socially there or enjoy the non-class components of the school.

You can try and ask for more money from LUC, but they do not meet full need, nor is Davidson considered a peer…so low chance of success. But you have nothing to lose by asking.

I think the most important thing is that you choose a university where you won’t take on extra debt and that you’re excited about attending. If Loyola Chicago can become that school, great. Looking at the Film and Media Production major I personally don’t see that much of a difference between that coursework and the classes at some of the other universities. But if Loyola excites you and the others don’t, then seek out Loyola.

You did mention a preference for a smaller school. Loyola Chicago is about 11,000 undergrads, while Lake Forest is about 1650, DePauw is 1700, and Davidson is about 2000. Does that make a difference to you?

You will get a fine education at any of these schools so long as you do not take on any debt.

Since I was encouraged to research BU a bit more, I determined that it might actually be better for me to be put into a larger school environment because it will help me break out of my shell a bit and will be a change of pace. Small class sizes are somewhat important, but overall student body can be larger.

By the way, what major were you accepted into for Loyola? The Film & Media Production page said:

To apply for admission to the BA in Film and Digital Media program and scholarship consideration, please visit the Office of Undergraduate Admission and indicate your interest in film and digital media on your application. (Source)

At the moment, I’ve been accepted for computer science, but I’m not seeing anything about a portfolio requirement. I imagine it wouldn’t be so difficult to double major in Loyola’s film program.

I’m starting to think this thread is not for real. You applied for comp sci at Loyola?

Call and find out. And if you’re going to see if they’re going to change your financial aid offer, you better do it very soon, because it’s 1:47 in Chicago right now.

Yes, I applied for comp sci at almost all of the 40 schools I applied to because I had no idea what I wanted to study and comp sci makes money. I now have a better idea of my interests.

Ok, so here’s an option. Go get a cs degree at the least expensive college you have. Take well-paying summer CS internships and/or work for a year or two in CS. Use the money you make for a post-graduate degree in film or vfx etc.

Plus you would always have the ability to make money if/when you need.

Do you think it’s worth getting a computer science degree if I’m not passionate about computer science? Additionally, if I were getting a computer science degree, isn’t it more justifiable to compromise with a school I think I will enjoy? On top of all that, would that not make me essentially ineligible to pursue architecture should I decide to do so?

They did not respond in my favor. They did say that I could apply for continuing student scholarships, and if I do well, I could knock off an additional 5k-ish per year off my debt and I could move off-campus during my junior and senior years.

One does not apply to 40 colleges as a computer science major if they are not into computer science. I seriously do not understand what’s going on with this search.
