I was accepted into BU’s College of Engineering and plan to attend! However, I don’t even know where to start with housing. I’ve never shared a room before, but I am open to the idea. I don’t know if it would be better to stay in a large or small style dorm. I like to have a quiet place to go, and I think I would like to stay close to a dining hall. Do you have any recommendations for freshman housing? Also, would you recommend staying in engineering halls/dorms? Thanks! :-bd
Congrats on the acceptance! There are two major dorms for Freshman: Warren Towers and West. Warren Towers is either 90% Freshman OR 90% of Freshman go there (don’t remember off of the top of my head). It is much more urban and is closer to the centre of campus. I will be going to Warren Towers because of its proximity to SMG (now called Questrom School of Business) as well as the social aspects that I have heard about it. I’ve read somewhere on here that Warren has the better social life, but its yet a very subjective thing to say. My friends have told me that its a good dorm to meet a lot of people.
On the other hand, West has much nicer dorms and is considered to be more chilled out and feels more like a campus. The downside is that it isn’t very close to the centre of BU where the majority of the schools are such as CAS and SMG. I’m not sure where the Engineering School is though West is maybe a 15-20 minute walk from SMG, so its not so bad. It is also very close to the Fitrec and Agganis Arena.
Both dorms have cafeterias and I’ve heard that West has better food! I still chose Warren, because you are not restricted to a specific cafeteria. Also, the Student Union building is closer and there are a lot of dining options over there as well Picking one of these dorms is a very tough decision and can only be based on what you need/want out of college. Seeing that you like having a quiet place to go, I would lean towards West. You can look at the inside of the dorms somewhere on the BU website.
Hope this helps!
Oh and btw, there aren’t just two dorms that you can choose from. There are the Brownstones which are located on Bay State Road, which is in a very quiet setting. Personally, I wouldn’t recommend this as a freshman. But perhaps maybe dorm there as a Sophomore of Junior. There’s also Towers (almost directly opposite Warren Towers), which I heard from my tour guide is mainly for Sophomores and upperclassmen. But Freshman can still be found there!
I just outlined Warren and West in my previous post, because they are the most desirable for Freshmen.
Unless you have $$$ for a single, you’ll have a roommate. It’s not so bad, though a double is way better than a triple or a quad, unless you get really great roommates. (also sometimes quads are massive!)
So for ENG, your three best bets are: Warren Towers, Towers and Bay State Road. Bay State Road will be the most difficult to get into as priority goes to upperclassmen, but you never know. Take a look at the specialty houses and if you qualify for any, apply. I didn’t get into one as a Freshman, but as a Sophomore I got into German House and loved living there. Towers is mostly sophomores and some Freshman, and is a quieter, more laid back dorm than Warren. If you like a bit of quiet, Towers may be best for your first choice. There’s a dining hall in the basement–it’s not as fancy as Warren (dining hall wise), but it’s solid. When I lived on Bay State, equi-distant between Towers & Warren dining halls, I usually chose Towers b/c it was less crowded (and had awesome sandwich makers, and strawberry smoothies during brunch on the weekends!).
But Warren is the closest dorm, physically, to ENG. You could literally roll out of bed and be in class five minutes later. Plus, there’s a convenience store downstairs–a nice touch when it’s freaking cold & you want to buy snacks or whatever. It’s also got a big, fully equipped dining hall, and is where most Freshman live, making it the ultimate dorm to be in as a Freshman when it comes to making friends and your social life. (2nd is West Campus) It’s more of a party dorm, if that’s your thing. (though b/c of that, the RAs crack down way more)
I suggest the specialty housing Engineering floors. The engineering floors are in Towers and Warren.
Thank you for the help! It sounds like it’s easier to be surrounded by other freshman your first year
