BU is great...but what are my chances?

I’m a Hipanic Junior Male.

ACT: 28
Eng-32
Math-27

SAT:??? (Scores coming on Thursday, the goal is 1900-2000)

GPA: 3.5 weighhted, 3.0 unweighted (steadily increasing)

EC’s:

3 Years Varsity Cross Country and Track
Cross Country Co-Captain
State/Regional Championship Team member (Team is top 20 US)
Summer Job at Villiage Market (25 hrs/wk)
Donation to “Lockes of Love” program (gives hair to kids w/cancer)
4 years guitar lessons

I am very passionate about all of my EC’s, and I don’t plan on doing pointless organizations or clubs in hopes of impressing colleges. I simply do what I am passionate about.

For extra stuff, I will start my essays this summer, and plan to write about my life and experiences with running. I have 2 reccomendations set up, and I will also be taking SAT II’s in Biology next month.

I plan to do Cross Country and Track in college and have contacted the Boston coaching staff already. I am hoping to get a partial scholarship, if not I will be recruited and just join the team.

Thanks for letting me know about becoming a Terrier!

Looks pretty good to me.

you should get in

I don't know how much BU considers weighted GPA versus unweighted. Your unweighted GPA is low, but you are both Hispanic and an athlete so it's a guess. Make sure you express your real interest to the coach.

My understanding is that some schools - I'm not talking about BU because I don't know - coaches have a certain number of "guaranteed" admits. They can't take unqualified people but they can earmark specific people who meet the basic standards.

Yes, my unweighted GPA is my weak point right now, but I expect it to be around 3.2 by the time I apply (some easier senior classes).

As for the "guaranteed" admits thing, I have heard similar stories from other colleges. An athlete may not recieve a scholarship or grant, but the coach may be able to sneak some encouragement into the admissions office if he/she likes the athlete.

If it makes any difference, I have 3 family members (2 aunts and an uncle) who have graduated from BU or from a BU graduate program. I don't really care about this, but it may play some importance.

thanks for your input, keep it coming

(I'll also update with my SATs later)

BUMP

SAT's came in this morning. I'm generally satisfied.

1930/2400

Verbal- 610
Math- 640
Writing- 680
Essay- 12

Does this help/hurt my chances???

Thanks

You should be fine.

I can tell you for sure that at some very good schools the coaches have a specific number of guaranteeds. The kids have to meet the standards but they won't be rejected if they do. I would not be surprised if BU has the same system.

I feel like my SATs aren't as good as my ACTs. I feel like BU applicants usually have better SATs, but I'm not sure wether or not to retake them. Any ideas??

thanks

Worst comes to worst you do GS like i'm doing. You should be fine getting in. Just keep it up.

You probably fit CGS. One thing you should think about is whether you'd be more comfortable in CGS. I don't know the quality of your school or even where you live, but CGS is a very good way to help you succeed.

He would be at the top of CGS. Highest I know is my friend with mid 1800s and a 3.4ish GPA.
