So after planning to go to a small LAC, my DD 19 has now decided she wants to look at big schools too! It appears that not too many of them meet full need. BU’s website says they can’t meet full need for all students. We’re planning a trip to Boston and Maine next month to look at some schools, and I am wondering if it’s worth it to include BU. What are others’ experiences with BU and need-based aid?
Thanks!
Boston University does not meet full need for all.
Have you used their net price calculator? Any reason why this wouldn’t be reliable for you?
If she wants bigger schools…is there any reason your state flagship public university isn’t on the list?
Our state school is on the list.
Also, net price calculator would not be accurate due to recent divorce.
If Pell eligible need based aid can be very generous. Otherwise no.
If Pell eligible, BU would give th maximum Pell Grant of about $6000, plus a Direct Loan of $5500 for freshman year. In addition, you probably would get a school grant. But will it all total the $70,000 plus that it costs per year to attend BU? Probably not.
BU also requires the CSS Profile, and also requires the non-custodial parent form. So even though you are divorced, both parent incomes and assets will still be considered.
Maybe things have gotten better…but BU typically gaps kids when awarding need based aid.
BUT really…the only way to know for sure…apply and see. Some students do get really good aid…but it’s not guaranteed.
