Bu/neu/wpi

I know it’s almost time to make a decision, but I am still trying to decide between BC, BU, NEU and WPI. I am planning to be an engineering major (not sure yet or maybe pre-med). WPI gave me $41500 with $10000 loans+payments, BU $40100 (commuter) , NEU $36,900 (commuter) and BC gave me $50300 with $4500 loans. In this tough economy, BC gave me the best deal. So I was leaning towards BC. Also BC is a lot more prestigious than other schools. I know BC doesn’t have engineering, but since they are giving me the most money I will still consider it.

Now, if I want to major in engineering, which college will give me the best education/prepare me for real world challenge/ help me get a good job and above all I will be able to keep my grades up (here BU has a slight disadvantage because of it’s grade deflation). Now if you were to choose one among those engineering schools which one wpuld you choose (based on my criteria) and why??

Please someone help me out here. Your opinion will help me make a critical decision.

First of all, when it comes to college, don’t weigh heavily on the advice of people on online forums. People will try to point you in the right direction, but in the end, you really have to make the decision, because it will be a decision that affects the next four years of your life.

Everyone is different, and everyone comes into the college game looking for different things. For me, location and environment is a huge thing. I notice that you wrote down (commuter) right next to BU and Northeastern, does that mean you’ll be commuting from home? If so, then I wouldn’t considering choosing those. I don’t think I would be able to give up on the college experience, and I feel that if I did not live in a dorm with hundreds of other people my age, then it would take away from my experiences. I also feel that as a commuter, I would have a harder time making friends than if I lived in a regular dorm. I’m sure that there might be people that can refute my claim, but it’s just my opinion.

If you know what you want to study, then you should pursue a school that best fits the program you are trying to look for. BC does not have much of an engineering program, but on the other hand WPI is pretty much specialized in mostly engineering, and is a renown school for it. The problem for me personally at WPI, is that it’s about 70 percent men, and that would take away from my experience as well.

I wish you luck in your future pursuits. I’m sorry if I couldn’t help you any more.

since i don’t know much about NEU, i can’t tell u about that, but BU and WPI would be the best choices for engineering. a good friend was making this same decision and decided on wpi because he thought he’d prefer the environment more. that’s what you should think about is a)which school even has what you want lol, and has a good program and b) where you’d be happy.

NEU, BU, and WPI are all great schools for engineering…BC not so much. Don’t get me wrong, BC is a great school. However, if you want to go into engineering that might not be the way to go.

Now between NEU, BU, WPI you’ll have to see which atmosphere you like better and where you think you’d be happiest. BU is right in the city and is very diverse, while WPI is much smaller and suburban. Just look at what you’d want in a college and go from there…

Also think about which program you want - because engineering is a big word. Then look at how the school approaches your program.

You can also look up how much they do in research in that area. Here are the American Society for Engineering Education pages for BU, WPI and Northeastern. They show the amount of research funding for each program by area. You can see the dollar amounts vary by area and by school.

I am still not sure which engineering program I want to major on. :frowning: But I am thinking about EE, ME or Bio-medical. How is the job growth for Bio-medical engineers?

Which school do you all think can provide me the best education and prepare me for work field?

Actually, since I researched a lot on commuting, you should know that the first year you CANNOT commute (i don’t know if you were figuring that you definitely would commute the entire year). You can commute the second semester of freshman year though (you will lose your deposit if you commute the second semester).

Oh and BTW as for BME, BU ranked 9th for this year (supposedly its climbing). So know that its pretty top tier! Cause thats what im doin =)…

While BU does require its freshmen to dorm, they do allow exceptions:

TheMan777-- How hard is Bio-medical engineering? What courses do you have to take? Would you say that it’s easier or harder than EE? Do you know what is the projected job growth in that field??? Do you think BU has grade deflation in BME courses and what do you think about the “grade deflation” issue/how true is it?

Also do you guys do projects like the students do at WPI or RPI?

I know people who commuted as freshmen.

^ I don’t think it matters that much. If I need to live on campus, I will.

But main concern is how good the engineering program at BU is? So my question to

TheMan777-- How hard is Bio-medical engineering? What courses do you have to take? Would you say that it’s easier or harder than EE? Do you know what is the projected job growth in that field??? Is it possible(any link) that I can see what courses I have to take as bio-medical engineering major?

Ok - I am far from an engineer but I was able to find this on the BU website pretty quickly -

[BU 2008-09 Undergraduate Bulletin-College of Engineering II](http://www.bu.edu/bulletins/und/item19g2.html#anchor03)

Also you could get a professor like this -

[Boston University - College of Engineering](http://www.bu.edu/phpbin/news-cms/news/?dept=666&id=49695)

Good luck

I am sorry I am an incoming student - you must have misinterpreted me XD, i just thought i could offer you some advice that I myself found helpful when I was deciding. I think there are a few helpers on facebook though. I do think I found a course list on their website…

Thanks TrixieAnn. That’s alright TheMan777. Let me know how everything goes there.
