BU, NYU, UCLA, USC decision

I suspect that day will come quite soon.

So happy for your son, Touchstone–we loved the summer program at BU and I know for sure your kid will be working with some absolutely wonderful students and faculty there. Congratulations on a great destination!

AdaQuince
maybe I missed it, but where did your S decide? I know he had a lot of great options.

Hope Ada doesn’t mind me answering - but her S is going to BU, too! CC is bringing a quite few students to Beantown!

Congrats on all the BU decisions. It’s a great program and Boston is a fun place to go to school. One of my Ds has a friend who plays for our Toronto hockey team and their playoff series is in Boston for the first two games. Yesterday, she received a text from him to tell her that they were practicing at the BU Arena, which he said is very nice! So if any of your theatre kids are hockey fans, they’ll have a nice place to watch college games, if time permits. :)

Marbleheader and AdaQuince. and any other lurking BU parents: Have you begun to think about your student’s top dorm choices?

Touchstone1, there are three dorms located very close to the CFA at BU: Rich, Claflin and Sleeper. Most of the freshmen in the School of Theatre live in one of those dorms because of the convenient location. (The three dorms are virtually identical.) After freshman year, the majority of SOT students share off-campus apartments.

When my son was a freshman, there were CFA floors in Rich and Claflin. My son requested the CFA floor in Rich and was assigned a roommate who was a freshman Production major in the SOT.

My S requested West Campus. I don’t think he specified which building. He liked being close to the gym and the cafeteria as well as the CFA. I know there is a CFA floor in Rich because that was the floor we visited during Open House.

Right, mine requested West also. I don’t think they had the option to select a specific West dorm. I thought the CFA floor was in Clafin. Is he thinking of requesting the specialized floor, AdaQuince, or does he want to broaden the kids he meets in his dorm?
My S. is worried, because he noticed how tiny the closets were in Sleeper, but from what NJTheatreMOM says, it seems that all three dorms have the same eensie weensie closets. I suppose he will have to adapt. NJTheatreMOM: What did your S think about the Bay Street brownstones for after freshman year? Is off campus more desirable?

Touchstone, I really don’t know about the Bay Street brownstones. I’ve heard of them and seem to recall that they are pricey. I think my son may have a couple of classmates who are sharing an apartment in Stuvi, the high-rise.

The great majority of the theatre students share apartments in Allston after freshman year. This is partly to save money; $600 or $700 a month for rent – with no meal plan – is much, much easier on the pocketbook than room and board at BU.

Allston is very close to West Campus where the CFA is, and the off-campus theatre students tend to all live a few blocks from one another.

I think what your son will want to do after freshman year will depend partly on whom he makes friends with and wants to share housing with.

My S put down West Campus also, but did not choose the CFA floor. He is planning on moving off campus after next year. (I am glad he will do freshman year on campus, tho, as a transition to college life!)

My sister, who had two boys go through the engineering dept at BU, said to be careful, however, because BU will sometimes whittle down their university grants if the student will not be living on campus - it happened to both her boys when they moved off campus. Can’t catch a break sometimes, LOL!

My daughter moved off campus after freshman year and BU stayed generous, she had great grades and she got more money each year.

Great to hear, GG’s mom!

I hadn’t heard about the phenomenon of losing grant money at BU by living off campus. It didn’t happen to my son, and he hasn’t mentioned it happening to anyone, and I haven’t read about it on CC. Hmm, I’m curious

Both my nephews experienced this. Now they are both engineering students, who are currently finishing up their doctoral programs - one at MIT and the other at the University of BC in Vancouver. They are smarty-pants, so I don’t think it was grade-involved. My sister - not a shy gal! - called to inquire and they told her it was somehow involved with a change in residential/meal plan. They didn’t stop their grants, but they were less moola.

But glad you are all saying it hasn’t happened to you. Could have been misinformation to my sister, but that’s what happened.

All in all BU was friendly about the financial aid, and one year when we appealed they responded with a larger offer. I found them to be good listeners, and I remember the woman I met with as being practical, and understanding. I had good paper work to back up my claims. So that part is up to us
It is all in the numbers. There was never a feeling of bait and switch. Giving the first year and taking it away in the next years. Only good memories of our dealings with those offices. It can be scarey, but they were kind.

Very nice to hear, Mother of GG!

It is important wherever your child ends up. The Financial Aid offices are very busy. They don’t have a lot of time to listen to a narrative. Be crisp, with your story, a few sentences and have the back up paperwork. They need to see it clearly. Make their job easier and they can give you an answer. Hopefully one you like hearing.

Waitlisted for Tisch BFA Acting and DYING OF ANXIETY
I have not received any emails or notifications regarding my current admissions status. Has anyone else who is on the waitlist for BFA ACTING at Tisch received anything? Does anyone know when they will be notifying people? This is the most nerve wracking experience of my life!!! Anyone else agree??!
