Bu or pitt or psu schreyer : Biomedical engineering/bioengineering

My son must choose soon. Tissue regeneration or prosthetics with brain machine interfacing. Will go on for phd. Huge scholarship from schreyer. Generous grant from Boston brings it down to pitts cost. Any insights? Thanks in advance.

BU would his best bet but why are you posting for him?

I am not sure if your userid is a joke but if you are indeed what they call a “helicopter Mom”, I would be more concerned about your son surviving his first year of Engineering away from home than his choice of schools.

Schreyer isn’t something that you want to turn down for universities like BU and Pitt non honors. My vote is for Penn State.

I am most familiar with Pitt, and they are known for their Bioengineering department.
[Department of Bioengineering](http://www.engineering.pitt.edu/AboutUs/)

My husband researched it thoroughly because our daughter will be enrolling in the program this fall. According to him (an engineer) Pitt does a better job of giving students a wide background of skills in BioE than some other schools. Pitt has anexcellent PhD program in BioE if that is a consideration. He did not compare it to PSU or BU.

Being somewhat biased, I would also recommend PSU. They have a significant alumni network that aids in internships and job placement. A degree from PSU speaks volumes.

Because all three schools are good, I would consider some other factors to help make the decision. Does he want city life, or is he okay with State College, which is in the middle of nowhere. (Students don’t mind it, but we couldn’t get our kids to apply there for that reason.) Is school spirit a consideration? What about transportation from home to school? Weather?

I’m hoping he chooses Pitt or PSU, but I’m biased. If he does choose Pitt, PM me since we will both have kids in the same department.

Also, has he visited all three campuses? What was his impression of each?

At PSU, because he is in Shreyer’s, he will need to do a thesis, but he will not have to at Pitt. I don’t know about BU. However, at Pitt, he can do a thesis if he so chooses.
