BU or spring admit UMD!?

Hey everyone I was hoping you could help me out with this decision since I only have 3 weeks left and my parents are leaving it up to me...

I'm planning on majoring in broadcast journalism and I was accepted at BU's communications school. I was also accepted at UMD, but for the spring, so if I end up going there, I will probably go to Loyola College in MD for the fall or a community college nearby.

I'm basing my decision on which has the best broadcast program from which I can get connections and have a successful career after college. Anyone and everyone's opinion is greatly appreciated!!!!

I know that the journalism school at UMD is top notch. I know that it has great internship options in DC and there are two major cities with different local news channels and news outlets in each city. There are radio stations in each city. Baltimore is like 30 minutes from UMD and DC is like 10. It is harder to get to baltimore without a car.

I don't know anything about BU and their journalism school but UMD's is one of the best schools they have. Engineering, business and journalism, I think are the big 3 at UMD and all are in the top 25 in the country.

The spring admit thing, in my opinion should NOT NOT NOT deter you at all from going to UMD. I don't know why it is such a turn off to some people. everyone that got spring are in UMD. They just go a few months later. no big deal. The community college classes will transfer right over if you take them in somewhere near UMD and i suppose layola will do the same. Just double check on which courses do transfer. I am taking community college classes right now and they too will transfer when i go in fall. It makes no difference. If UMD was your top choice the spring stuff shouldn't play a big role in my opinion.

What should play a big role is this... I assume that you didn't get into the journalism school direct. The journalism school is a Limited Enrollment Program (LEP). It is tough to get into and if it is the same as the business school, which is also an LEP, students are unable to apply until they are juniors. For the business school you need a little over a 3.0 to have a moderate chance, as listed by the stuff the business school gave us.

In my opinion you may have to pull a 3.2 or above to get in when you are a junior for the business school and if the journalism shcool is the same you may have to work hard.

here is the admission page at the merrill journalism school

http://www.journalism.umd.edu/undergrad/admit.htm

I also suggest posting this same thread on the BU page and on the college selection page. I am sure people there will have a better idea of how good the BU program is. I really know nothing about journalism but that UMD is 'good' at it and I really don't know anything about BU's journalism

I am sure there are internship opportunities at both institutions are great. One is in Boston and the history of the city is amazing. The other is right next to washington which holds newspapers like the washington post and is the political capital of the world.

edit: just as a side note to anyone looking at journalism. LOOK AT ALL THESE SCHOLARSHIPS!
http://www.journalism.umd.edu/financial/undergrad.html#undergrad2

I haven't seen anything like that for business. :(

lastly, go to where you feel the best. Here is a small video review at theu.com

Boston http://theu.com/watch/index.php?region=Northeast&schoolid=19168

UMD http://theu.com/watch/index.php?region=Northeast&schoolid=19129

Notice how they play up the journalism school on both of the reviews. YOu have some great options!

wow.. you really gave me a lot of suggestions, thanks a LOT i really appreciate it!

yeah, no problem, just trying to help a terp out. :D

I know BU has howard stern. I don't know how much that has to do with overall personality over broadcasting ability but he is the best radio personality in history regardless of what people think about him.

UMD alumni have had anchors like Connie Chung of CNN and she has worked with NBC, ABC, CBS, and MSNBC. UMD has had many sport anchors on ESPN's Sportscenter like bonnie bernstein, Len Elmore, Norman Esiason(also known as boomer), and scott van pelt. They all have been part of sportscenter which is the biggest sports show in history. Other broadcasters have been Mark McEWen who did editing for 'cbs this morning', Roland Martin which is a broacastor, and even Carl Bernsein who broke the Watergate story for the Washington Post.

edit: actually here you go. http://www.journalism.umd.edu/alumni/

I have a friend who is going to the journalism school and is excited abou it so i hear this stuff everyday :D

go to UMCP! =) like what cheapseats mentions, it has an awesome Journalism school, its close to DC, so it will offer more internship opportunities

i like the idea of going to communtiy college for the fall. it will save a lot of money. AND if you dont like a subject that you need to take for the CORE requirement, take it there! It will be easier to get a passing grade. you just need to make sure the classes you are taking will transfer to UMD.

BU communications is a million times better. I'm so surprised that you got accepted in BUCOMM but not Maryland for the fall semester. Personally, i would choose umd because of the campus and overall atmosphere, but if you're going on pure academics its BU comm all the way.
