Reflection
I was too lazy to fill our the college application. I was too lazy to study for the SAT. I was too lazy. Haha. No regrets though.

Strengths: Taken Observational Astronomy classes through Boston University. Taken more than 8 classes outside of school through institutions like Harvard, Berkeley, UT Austin, MIT, and NYU.
99 in Linear Algebra Class.
Grades were too good for them to reject me.
Weaknesses: Essays literally sucked. Recs probably sucked either way.
Why you think you were accepted? Grades.
Where else were you accepted: UT Austin Turing Scholars, Seton Hall.
Rejected from MIT and Caltech last week.

General Comments:
Well, Boston University is too expensive for me. Their financial aid offer was so horrendous… they gave me NOTHING. The Fed gov gave me like $6100 in grant and another $5500 in subsidized loans. What the hell? Isn’t Boston University as an institution supposed to offer me some financial aid? Ah well… never even considered BU, so yeah… hahaha.

Decision: Waitlisted

Reflection

Strengths: Test scores and extra-curicculars
Weaknesses: GPA
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My inconsistent transcript made it a hard choice. If the applicant pool wasn’t so large this year, I probably would have made it.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted- Bentley, Babson, WPI Rejected- BC, Clark Uni.

General Comments:
Honestly, really wished I hadn’t slacked off so bad. Really, I feel that my grades were the tipping point for it. I was the only one waitlisted at my school too, which had over 50 students apply, all of which either got a firm yes or no.

Rejected
4.36 gpa (weighted)
3.9 unweighted
33 ACT
heavy extracurricular and sports.

How?
Makes no sense… I don’t THINK Ur extracurricular don’t really matter for a school like BU. I THINK they just look at ur grades and go admit or reject… ur GPA, is it on a 4.0 scale? Ur ACT seems good enough to warrant an acceptance… wow… maybe they rejected u because u r too good an applicant… because they assumed that you wouldn’t attend even if u were accepted…

don’t let it get to u. BU gives NO financial aid.

Reflection

Strengths: standardized testing scores
Weaknesses: a couple bad grades from sophomore year, mediocre essays
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: My counselor had listed it as a safety for me; I think academically I just meet all the standards. The visual arts college was a wild card for me, though, I’m never sure how they objectively rank portfolios.
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Rejected at Yale, Waitlisted at Washington University, Accepted at UMass Amherst, haven’t heard back from anywhere else

General Comments:
hope this helps someone.
I’m not sure if I’ll go, the financial aid they gave me wasn’t great and I have other schools I’d really like to go to so I’m waiting on hearing from them.

Teacher Recommendation: 9/10 AP English teacher

I never read my recommendations… I’m just assuming they were good considering that I spoke to all my recomeders on a daily basis… We had solid relationships inside and outside of the classroom!

Notes:
I don’t know if it helped that I was diverse. I lived in two other countries prior to moving to the U.S.

D accepted into BU and honors college with 20K scholarship (presidential, I think?) for a film production major. 4.0 UNW/4.5 W. 33 ACT, National Merit Finalist but did not name BU as first choice. Strengths are writing - great essays and letters of rec, some student Emmy awards for films, etc. Not that many EC’s and very little (if any) community service but heavy involvement within her writing and filmmaking interests.

Decision: Accepted to CAS w/ Presidential Scholarship

Job/Work Experience: Internships at real-estate and consulting firms
Volunteer/Community service: Participation in school’s student life organization
Summer Activities: Said internships
Essays (rating 1-10, details): Common App was very unique about being a leader of an esports team where everyone else is an adult, probably 9/10. Why BU was generic as fuck, 6/10

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: 7/10, Economics teacher
Teacher Rec #2: 10/10, CompSci teacher
Counselor Rec: 10/10
Additional Rec: 8/10 from prior principal

School Type: Private International
Ethnicity: White
Gender: M
Income Bracket: 250k+
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): First gen, citizen of extremely underrepresented country, intl. not needing aid, speak 4 languages fluently

Reflection

Strengths: Tons of unique factors in application (ECs, hooks), ACT score, really sold myself as this international ambassador
Weaknesses: Next to no community service, subject tests were meh, ECs might weird out some people with so many videogame-related things, Why BU essay
Why you think you were accepted: Pretty good stats
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Accepted at UCLA, UCSD and Fordham (Dean’s Scholarship). Rejected at Northwestern. Waiting on NYU, Berkeley and Ivies

General Comments: Pretty hyped about the Presidential Scholarship, but doubt I’ll end up attending BU. Considering the Northwestern rejection I’ll probably end up at NYU as initially projected.

Congrats to everyone who got in!

Decision: Accepted to the College of General Studies
(originally applied to the College of Arts and Science)

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): 1730/2400, 1310/1600
ACT: N/A
SAT II: N/A
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 3.5
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): N/A
AP (place score in parenthesis): N/A
IB (place score in parenthesis): N/A
Senior Year Course Load: 1 AP, 4 honors classes, 3 ACP classes (this is my first year taking any AP/honors classes at all during high school)
Major Awards: N/A

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis): School Newspaper (staff writer)
Job/Work Experience: N/A
Volunteer/Community service: 100+ hours
Summer Activities: community service (building houses in Tennsessee), went with my school to Europe on a WWII educational trip.
Essays (rating 1-10, details): 8 – my essay was okay but I’m not sure how it compared to everyone else’s
Recommendations (rating 1-10, details): I’ve only read one of them and I would say it was a 5-ish? It was pretty generic.

Teacher Rec #1: ACP English teacher (junior year)
Teacher Rec #2: ACP Geometry & Algebra teacher (sophomore and junior year)
Counselor Rec: Really long, and probably is the thing that saved my skin. It described why I did crappy in school but also described all my personal hobbies and traits.
Additional Rec: Social Worker at my school that I’m friends with – she wrote about how I constantly mentioned that BU is my dream school.
Interview: no interview

Other

State (if domestic applicant): Connecticut
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: public
Ethnicity: white
Gender: female
Income Bracket: not that high, but decent.
Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): Father died, been out of the country more than 10 times, doesn’t need financial aid, applied early decision/sent deferral letter when I was deferred about how I would attend BU if accepted.

Reflection

Strengths: My counselor rec really showed my true personality and I think that BU liked that. Also a very strong increase in GPA throughout high school.
Weaknesses: I had severe anxiety throughout most of high school until I got medication in the end of my sophomore year, so my grades and rigor level were really low for a while. Junior and senior year I got a 4.0, but only in senior year have I been taken more rigorous classes.
Why you think you were accepted/waitlisted/rejected: Most likely because I come from a good school system in CT and because I’m a decently well-rounded student, I guess? I managed to overcome a mental disorder due to the death of my father, so I guess they liked that. I honestly have no idea. Maybe it was because I mentioned it was my dream school and that I would attend if accepted?
Where else were you accepted/waitlisted/rejected: I was accepted to the honors program at Salve Regina University and was awarded with a Trustee Scholarship.

General Comments: SO happy to have been accepted! BU is my dream school, and looking back on it, I’m not sure why they chose me out of so many applicants. I didn’t really do anything during high school until I suddenly gained motivation in junior year, so I’m well aware of how weak my application is. The only good reason I can think of is that they liked my personality or motivation or something?

Also, I know the College Of General studies is for those who weren’t exactly qualified, but I think I deserve to be there. I didn’t work as hard as many of the people on this thread during high school, so I need to prove myself. I’m more than willing to take the challenge.
