BU RISE 2022 - Applicants Thread

Yeah I’m in the same boat; accepted into the matching phase, but yet to hear back on mentor placement.

Does anyone want to call their office to get an idea of their timeline?

Someone I know emailed them days ago and they said it’ll be released late-April. I know someone else who got matched today, so I’m guessing they’re beginning to actively match students now.

Got it! Guess they are matching right now. Do they call you or send an email for matching?

any interview before email of matched results? Thanks!

Hi guys! I was matched yesterday for neuroscience (maybe I’m the one that @funkandsoul was referring to? idk lol).

In case anyone is curious, I received the email around 1 PM PST and it basically just said congrats and I was matched with a professor. The professor was actually one of the profs I listed, and I was also provided with the lab’s location and website. (I think there are sometimes interviews and have been in the past, but I didn’t get one. Just the matching phase email on 3/25 and yesterday.)

I haven’t seen anyone else get matched yet, but good luck to everyone!! I guess they’re starting to match people now, so hopefully you’ll all receive results within the next two weeks or so. I hope we’ll all get to meet up in person!

Just got this email😭
Dear RISE applicant,

I’m writing to inform you that due to the record number of applications we received this year, the matching stage timeline has been delayed. Most offers of admission will now be made by mid-May. We appreciate your patience. Due to the amount of time it takes our office to secure placements for RISE applicants, we ask you to inform us immediately if you are no longer interested in participating in the program.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact us via email at rise@bu.edu. Thank you for your interest and commitment to the RISE program.

Sincerely,

Michael Raymond

does anyone know how hard it is to get matched from the matching stage? the result push-back is making things rly difficult

Not sure. Do we know how many going into matching round

(Kinda a long message my bad)

I’m not sure and I don’t think they’ll advance too many people, but I think they need to advance slightly more than the amount they’re able to take since not everyone who gets into internship will commit. (And we don’t actually know the RISE yield rate either-- I assume it should be pretty good, but definitely not close to 100% like RSI or anything)

If I were to guess, I’d say they probably advance around 100 something people? It’s also strange since the number of RISE internship students seems to fluctuate between years (so I have no clue what their capacity is lol), whereas the number of practicum seems to stay around 40-50. Like for RISE 2019 (check out RISE 2020 alumni newspaper on their website), they had 88 internship students, whereas for RISE 2021 (count total internship projects on poster symposium), they had 50 something internship students. Although this can be due to a variety of factors (like reduced capacity due to pandemic, less success matching, lower yield, etc), so I’m not sure where I’m going with this lol, but I think it’s still pretty interesting to think about.

I do believe that they’re actively trying to find a mentor for people though, and internship matching is just delayed since the initial internship advancing email was also delayed compared to previous years. From the 2019 BU RISE thread, it appeared most people got the matching phase email mid-March and received offers to internship late April, but this year, we got the matching phase email late March so I guess it makes sense that everything is shifted back half a month to mid-May. It definitely sucks that RISE will be coming out later than other programs, but I’m hopeful that this 2nd delay is just from the initial delay, and probably not because they’re having less luck with professors this year or anything.

I think more acceptances will start coming out over the next few weeks, so stay hopeful and don’t stress too much everyone!

Thanks. Do you know the matching rate ? It won’t be 100 percent, right?

I don’t think it’s 100%, because if it is, then the matching phase email will basically be an offer of admission, and they explicitly stated that it wasn’t an offer of admission. From stalking people’s speculations on past threads, I assume that the matching rate should be pretty high and majority of people get matched, but some research fields will definitely be more competitive (fields that have more applicants or fields where less profs are available).

Just got matched for microbiology today at 2:25 PM! I’m really surprised that I got my decision so early, especially since I didn’t get into the 2 other programs I applied to.

I’m really excited to spend my summer at Boston, and good luck to the rest of you! You all deserve to get in, and I have full confidence that you all will after seeing your stats.

Feel free to PM me any questions!

Has anyone on the Practicum waitlist gotten accepted yet?

Does anyone know how to compare RISE vs. Garcia? I got into Garcia and moved on to matching phase for RISE, but have not heard anything yet. Is it worth it to wait for RISE, or are they about the same level of prestige?

They’re similar. If Garcia has a time limit for a payment, I advise you to pay that instead of gambling on RISE.

My kid got matched for Earth and Environment Science last Friday.
Good luck with all of you guys too!
