BU RISE Program 2019

@nymphalidae oh great! that sounds good! and yeah, i got into a couple others and i’m waiting for one more decision

Tomorrow is the end of the week so we should receive emails letting us know

@nymphalidae sorry for the late response but i can’t seem to find the fb group?
edit: just kidding! found it thanks!

@serahn123 yessss squad up

Just in case anyone else is looking for the FB group – it’s called BU RISE '19 (exactly as written) Hopefully I don’t get flagged for this (since it’s technically not a link) but add groups/346049369444354 to the end of your facebook address

Good luck to everyone still waiting – I hope you hear back today!!

haha just got rejected :)))

@melon24 - it is ok - are you placed in wait list - do you have other plans?

@arun07 yeah i’m on the waitlist and i’m planning on doing research at my local university. it’s 10x cheaper and i’ll be able to do other things as well by staying at home so not bad i suppose

After getting rejected from my 2nd choice program, I will be heading to RISE! I am super excited to go there this summer.

congrats @Mathematician123 have a great time - anybody matched after being in waitlist?

yeah i got matched after being waitlisted.

Congrats @coolkid347 - when did you hear about the match? what field? is it one of the fields you had expressed interest , is it a different professor from the three you asked for?

Any one else matched from waitlist?

what should we pack (other than the stuff that is on the bu website)

I was told by @Succ55 that posting stats might be preemptively helpful for people thinking of applying, so here I am lol (albeit many months later). I was matched to an Anatomy & Neurobiology lab.

Number Crunching:

  • ACT: 36 Composite, 36 in all subcategories
  • SAT: 1570 (780 English, 790 Math)
  • SAT II Chemistry: 800
  • GPA: 4.0 UW, I think like a 4.4 W or something, idrk. Dunno how some of you people had 4.6W but ok no flex

Essay Stuffs:

  • Talked a lot about my interest in neuro, neurogenesis, etc and tied into epistemology
  • I volunteer at a hospital and nursing homes, so I mentioned my close proximity to Alzheimer’s patients (which is great because my lab does a lot of Alzheimer’s stuff!)
  • Talked also about teaching science to kids
  • Discussed my desire for a collaborative environment because my HS is competitive and kinda sucks for that reason

Et Cetera:

  • I don’t have any prior research experience, so I remember being pretty surprised I was selected, but it goes to show you don’t have to have done everything in the world to get in. Never did any of that fancy competition stuff in HS either.
  • I think essays are a pretty big determining factor over whether or not you’ll get in. Everyone is probably pretty similar academically, so it doesn’t really matter if your stats are marginally lower or higher than others. If you’re passionate about something, it’ll show through via your writing. I definitely did not get matched to any of the people I specifically mentioned, but I got matched with a prof whose interests and previous lab research aligns itself really nicely with my own interests :’)

Packing Stuff (probably too late to help the last person that posted lol sorry my guy):

  • Omg bring a fan. There is no AC. vvv warm in here rn
  • Bring shower slippers. The showers are disgusting. The whole bathrooms are disgusting. Can we just remove the bathrooms.

The packing list is pretty comprehensive and helpful. Some people brought fun discretionary items like speakers, which you definitely don’t need, but it makes certain mandatory events more enjoyable.

Sorry for making this the thiccest post known to this thread! Hopefully this helps you people in the future that are considering applying

Thanks for your feedback - I’ll be sure to keep all this in consideration when I apply here next year!

@Mathematician123 Glad to hear it! Good luck on your application!

Does anyone know anything about financial aid for RISE? How generous they are, etc (I’m middle class)

hey guys! i’m looking for some rise alums to join a server of rise admits for 2022 and talk about the experience—if you’d be interested, please dm me!
