BU/Tufts/BC/UMass Amherst/Amherst Pre-med

Which of the following schools have the "best" pre-med/science programs?

-BU
-BC
-Tufts
-Amherst
-Umass Amherst

Other comments on these schools' pre-med programs are more then welcome. Thanks =)

Since the pre-med courses are the science courses they’re all very good. But my money would be on Tufts and Amherst.

All offer basic science courses. (Frosh Chem/Calc ain’t rocket science, since many high school teachers teach something supposedly equivalent.)

The schools are too different socially; “best” depends on the student and personal fit.

How is each school socially?

Marker13-- if you want to know about the social scene at each of the schools, you’ll get more responses if you post to the individual school forums.

^Or the Search & Selection forum. Please read the sticky on PreMed schools:

As a Tufts freshman, my advice is: it will depending on what you are looking for in a school.

If you want to save money, pick UMass Amherst, unless you get really good aid from one of those places. This is not an insignificant decision when you factor in the cost of medical school (can be up to $70k/year). You should also pick this if you want a large high-quality research institution at a fraction of the price of BU.

If you want a research institution, you should choose Tufts, BC, or BU, depending on what gives you the most money. All three are very good schools, though with so many people at BC, it may be hard to get to know your professors even in upper level classes. I don’t think that is true at BC or Tufts.

If you want a small liberal arts college feel, pick Amherst. It’s a fantastic school that is very well ranked. You can also do research at UMass, which is right next door, and the Five College Consortium will allow you to take upper level classes which may not be offered in Amherst. Tufts, despite being a high-activity research institution, also still has a liberal arts feel to it, which I think is good.

Tufts, BU, BC, and UMass will all have enormous basic pre-med classes. Tufts is probably the smallest of those, but the Fall Chem 1 sequence will start out with 2 sections of just under 200 kids in each. Amherst might not, but will still probably have fairly large ones.

BC’s are actually smaller, averaging ~150… (Probably bcos biz & comm are the two largest majors; thus, science classes aren’t that enrolled.)

The smartest thing to do is to go to UG on full ride/ full tuition or very large Merit scholarship to the place that fits your personality and your personal goals (both for Med. School and otherwise), get as close to GPA=4.0 as possible with decent MCAT and you will be all set.

When S was looking at undergrad schools in 08/09, the market crash really put Amherst at a disadvantage. Their sciences were in desperate need of updating and they were putting any kind of infusion of new/improved space etc on the back burner. I don’t believe that has changed at all in the two years since. While it’s a great school and clearly recognized as such, I’d research their science department a great deal before putting it ahead of the rest.
