compare and contrast. What does BC have thats better and vice versa

BC = better hockey :P

On a serious note, it has a different feel to it.
-It has a more suburban feel
-Jesuit teachings
-lacks diversity
-A couple minute T ride into Boston

BU on the other hand:
-Within the city
-larger
-No “traditional” campus
-more options (opinion)

I’d say it is difficult to rank one as better than the other, but in my opinion, I’d pick BC over BU any day.

BC is better than BU statistically

In the 2011 US News Ranking of National Universities
- BC is ranked number 31
- BU is ranked number 56

BC has the 9th best undergraduate business program in the nation
and has better sports teams

It really depends what you want in a university–campus vs in the city etc
I personally like BC better

Reputation/Prestige wise BC is the stronger of the two.

I honestly don’t understand the difficulty in choosing between BU and BC. They are totally different schools. If you are looking for on-paper answer, its BC. It would help if you stated what you wanted out of college.

In terms of environment, I much prefer BU. Also, I like their student clubs and organizations more than BC’s.

Dear Marker 13 : Your wrote -
There are many threads here that discuss the BC vs. BU rivalry. Let me offer a light hearted sports rivalry response.

Over the last three years, these two schools have combined for all three men’s ice-hockey national championships. Of course, BC leads, 2-1. And then there was the victory in the Beanpot the other night …

Seriously, many threads discuss these two “competitors”. Best to visit both and draw your own conclusions.

If you want a legitimate campus then without a doubt Boston College would be a better fit. Statistically BC is a better school as well

Shiffer is correct BU for Hockey. BC for everything else including partying.

hmm, BC just one the Beanpot and is ranked #1 in hockey while BU finished dead last and is ranked #17 overall.

BC is so much better than BU that it shouldn’t even be compared to it…also BC is hockey east champs and about to go off and win another national title so don’t even try to say BU hockey is better. BC is the best college out there. Period. Also, it “sucks to BU.” =)

haha this thread is going to be such bias if you post on the BC board… anyways BC is better so yeahh. BC is where it’s at

=/ Well it depends. I’ve known of two alumni from my school who hate it at BC. One’s transferring to BU or Tufts. Along with two other alumni, they see it as a rich, snobby, white school, essentially. The fact that my school is both poor and diverse didn’t help them adjust to BC…I can tell you now that probably the biggest factor in determining whether you want BC or BU is diversity. I can honestly say that rank doesn’t matter. Not to mention that while BC is ranked higher, BU is more known internationally–sort of like Boston’s NYU (In and Of the City, In and Of the World).

So…if you are rich and white, you’ll probably fit in at BC. But if you value diversity more than a small jump in college rank, then choose BU. I applied to both and can’t wait for either’s decision, but I honestly choose BU.

I can’t imagine myself fitting in with people are will always be more privileged than me, who will be wearing expensive designer clothes everyday, and who will have better looking cars.

Any thoughts?

you cant see yourself fitting in with people who have more than you? good luck with fitting in with the world then… there will always be people with more, thats life… the way you adjust to it will bring you far in life. Also, if you cant fit in with them then i suppose you have no intentions on making a large amount of money in your life.

@JFetrov Yeah it would be really awful, especially if they were really prejudiced against you and believed all the rumors they had heard about your high school. Especially rumors about the cars hardly anybody on campus drives.

They have completely different atmospheres. BC’s campus reminds me of Columbia, Fordhham or any enclosed campus. They really are not in Boston proper either. BU is more like Pitt, NYU, GW and other city schools that are integrated with the city streets. BC is more homogeneous with a lot of Catholics being a Jesuit school. It’s also a smaller school.

As to which is better, it depends on what you like better. At my kids’ schools, BC is a top contender and the top kids all apply there. BU applicants include kids who are not quite in that top academic tier.

No, I was just using the cars as an example. Obviously, most people are on campus in BC so that’s a no-brainer. I’m not biased against BC…no need for the sarcastic tone, guys. I just want the non-posters to have the false perception that BC is always the better match for them. I don’t want anyone expecting to go to a college believing they will be guaranteed to have a good experience by prestige alone. And yes, the true test of an individual is to be able to be around people who are different from them–fear of difference is indeed the darkest of human weaknesses. But the same can be said about BU. At least you won’t be stuck around white preps all the time, no offense.

*don’t want

Obviously prestige does not guarantee a good experience, but your comments about the student body are still off base and reflect a stereotype that comes from the loudest subgroup on campus. If I said don’t go to BU unless you want to hang around a bunch of gay hipsters, most BU students would object for the same reason. But in any event, I don’t think I have ever heard a BC student ever refer to another as a “prep.” Those middle school labels sort of die out in college and people are just people. The white/preppy stereotype has been more than thoroughly discussed on this board before.

But if you want to compare the wealth of the student bodies, then lets do that. BC is need-blind and BU isn’t, all for about the same cost. BC is known for having a wealthy student body, but if you look at the percentage of students receiving aid, you can see that BU has a wealthier one. Should I add rich gay hipsters to the stereotype above? No, that would be ignorant of me. But if you want to make an objective statement about where an aid-receiving student would feel more comfortable, the answer is that such a student would have more classmates in his/her situation at BC.

If you are majoring in business, BC is hands down the better choice for your post-grad career prospects.

I can’t speak about BU’s alumni network, but BC’s is incredibly strong, another post-grad asset for more than just biz majors.

Talking about false perceptions, let’s eliminate some.

- A sampling of two people from one school who both “hate” BC obviously offers a good generalization of BC?

2) You’re only saying that to substantiate your thin argument for BU. Many factors contribute to going to either and, for that matter, any two schools.

3) This statement is beyond laughable. NYU and BU? No comparison I’m afraid. And, even if BC is worse according to your insistence, ever heard of Harvard, MIT?

4) Diversity is your new favorite word. In that case, a Harvard student should go to Rutgers because its the most diverse major university in the country since diversity tops everything.

5) I would advise taking the 20min subway ride here before making assertions like that

I feel obligated to object to such posts so that prospesctive students don’t get false impressions from biased posts. I never said BC is objectively better. No one should say that BU is better either. It all is relative to the person and the specific course of study.

In MA (at least at my school), BU is considered to be a joke of a private university while the BC name carries weight. Honestly the BU name is unimpressive around here, and you’d be equally served (prestige-wise) attending your state flagship.

In all seriousness though…

BC
Pros:
WAY MORE PRESTIGE
lots of school spirit
sick sports
real campus
vibrant social life/party scene
need-blind!
Cons:
student body not as diverse

BU
Pros:
in the heart of the city if that’s what you’re looking for
decent hockey? I think
more diverse than BC (higher int’l population)
Cons:
lack of prestige
not need-blind. their FA sucks compared to BC’s
GRADE DEFLATION…and since the school isn’t even prestigious the grade deflation sucks even more
no real campus
