Our S is trying to decide between BU and NYU for composition. He will also study piano (perhaps minor) while attending. Any input would be greatly appreciated. He received financial aid at both, keeping them pretty much equal cost wise. NYU is closer to home which cuts down on travel expenses. Thanks for any input.

BU is generally better regarded for music.

Difficult choice! My son and I visited both last month. Would put BU ahead for music generally as noted above. But NYU ahead for its music production and electronic music facilities. If your son is keen on movie scoring in future, for example, then NYU may be better with chances to get into such work during undergrad study.

Your son could arrange to visit NYU’s Steinhardt building 8/F studio facilities like we did to look around. (Being expanded now.) BU does not have similar gear.

Boston U for BMus then graduate work elsewhere would still work of course.

I can’t speak to the composition programs, but CAN speak to the NYU experience. I have a third year junior there, and my daughter has had unbelievable opportunities between having some great professors and living in the City. She’s been able to take multiple grad level courses, works at the Museum of Natural history, etc. She’s going to France on a grant with one of her professors this summer. Interestly, had she known what her major was going to be, she wouldn’t have picked NYU because the archaeology dept is so small. In reality, that’s what’s given her so much opportunity.
So, for what it’s worth - we feel that NYU has been worth every penny. Good luck!
