Hey all,
I have full ride scholarships available to me from BU and RPI. I'm more of a technical person, but I'm also very multifaceted in my interests. I'm a competing pianist, I enjoy doing physical things and working out, I speak three languages, and I also enjoy the more geeky things, if you will.

So far, my main interests seem to be in pursuing physics research, cognitive neuroscience, aerospace engineering (NASA), or neurology/neurosurgery. However, I find myself intrigued by subjects such as computer engineering, nanotechnology, biotechnology (genetic engineering), and many others.

It seems like RPI is a theoretically better place for me to be, but a dilemma remains: the 72% male, 28% female ratio at RPI.

How would I fare in choosing either school? Is a person who loves socializing with girls going to feel ostracized at RPI? Would choosing BU hinder my future potential?

Honestly 28% females?! Just think about what that’s going to be like for four years. FOUR YEARS. You’ll be lucky if you know what a girl looks like when you get out!

Well I really don’t know much about how good either school is in the science department so hopefully someone else can give you some advice, good luck. (Just think about that! 28%!)

The bright side is that a very shockingly large percentage of guys there are nerdy/dorky, from what I hear. If one is normal and fits somewhere between being a meathead (jock) and a nerd, one apparently tends to fare well. Also, there’s an all girl school in the same city (Troy).

Yeah, you’re probably right. On the other hand, I’m willing to look past my ***** for four years when considering the prospect of a successful career… And it only takes one girl; it’s not like everyone is a complete dork.

Academically speaking, does anyone know much about BU vs. RPI? I’m going to visit both schools next week, but I’d like to hear a little more information from anyone who might know…

I would say that RPI seems to have less of a social scene. The town around BU is probably more lively as well. Academic wise, both schools are probably pretty good. I don’t know specifically about BU, but RPI is a pretty good technical school. However, when I applied, I think that BU is a little more requiring, in that they now require you to take SAT IIs. I don’t think RPI has that requirement.

I think you’re right, but RPI definitely has some of the top (top three, even) programs in the country for what I’m looking for. That said, I love Boston (I’m only 25 miles away from it now).

I feel like they’ve done a lot of meaningful research in RPI and I hear about something they discover almost every week… I’m sure BU has quite a few things going on as well, but I just haven’t heard as much, and the website is harder to navigate when it comes to reading about their tech programs.
