Hey guys,
I’m doing a little thing to help me choose between these two colleges. I’m having a hard time deciding. So I thought you guys could help me a little?
I got accepted to BU, with a $10,000 financial aid award and to Syracuse with a $30,000 financial aid award. Now that’s why i’m feeling kind of confused. I want to go to BU, but I think the award at Syracuse is better because out of the 30,000… 25,000 is just scholarships/grants. But then, I heard a lot of bad things about Syracuse also. I’m really confused!!
Help me!??!!

That's a lot of money difference. Think about what you may want to study and what Syracuse has to offer. Think about what your family can afford.

I think the city of Syracuse pretty much defines the word "boring", saved from being a dump only because it has so much other competition for that honor. But the campus of Syracuse is nice and if you like snow . . .

i'm ok with any price.. but 30,000 sounded good. but i dont know, syracuse is not my kind of campus.. it's more likke suburban area, im more of a city person!
i am so confused!

i think i would go with BU over syracuse.. for one thing, BU's reputation is pretty decent already, and its rankings are steadily rising. on the other hand, syracuse seems to be languishing at the same ranking for quite some time.
it also really depends on what your studying --if you plan on going to law school or are interested in the social sciences, defenitely go with BU.
however, it all comes down to whether your family/you is willing to be in debt for a slightly better education.

...syracuse vs. boston university. syracuse- i got in as an honor student...with scholarship (i didn't even apply for one). BU- i just got in with no scholarship or financial aid (they don't give much to international students). but i decided to think of it this way: a fish among many fishes in a big pond is better than a big fish in a small pond in the long run..cuz eventually, big pond is better than small pond right?! well i think so. BU has better reputation. Plus, if you are more of a city person, definately go for BU.

What are you going to study?

If you are going to study communication than Syracuse is better academically. But I still prefer BU because I love the opportunity to live in Boston (with great internship opportunities), and plus I don’t think the level of education (in communication) varies much.

Good luck.

Honestly, other than the fact that Boston is, in my opinion, a better town than Syracuse to be a student, both schools are very similar in reputation. There are, however, a couple of majors that Syracuse excels over that of BU: communication and visual arts. I guess Maxwell's Graduate School is also very strong at Syracuse. For just about all other majors, the reputation is about the same.

Syracuse does have one other thing going for it: they provide a very nurturing environment with a lot of advising and tutoring. This is why they have one of the best retention and graduation rates among large universities. They also have very strong school spirit with their sports teams.

However, if you are not majoring in communication or visual arts, and don't care about having a nurturing environment, and don't care about having strong sports teams, the reputations are so similar that I would take the one that costs the least, net of scholarships.

i'm actually planning on majoring in either marketing or business admin.. and from what i've heard, boston is better for those? i'm not sure?

Don't go either place based on prestige. Were you admitted to SMG? It's a good program. I know nothing about Syracuse's business programs. They aren't that far apart so you should consider visiting. SMG's building, as you may know, is just outside Kenmore. It's only a few years old and they're doing some good, innovative things.
