BU vs. UMASS Amherst?

I'm planning to major in business and there's really two schools I might consider going. I'm applying to both, but I just want to start thinking about which one I really want to go to.

So is the School of Management better at Boston University or University of Massachusetts Amherst?

Before I always thought BU was better, but after going to this camp at Amherst, their SOM sounds pretty convincing. My camp counselor got a job at one of the big 4s after graduating from Amherst. He told me why not just go to a school where you have less loans and still end up "big". So now I'm wondering is it true? Will you really still end up "big" if you go to Amherst rather than BU?

BU is better

BU was surprisingly stingy, in comparison with other colleges' offers, for merit $ for my daughter last year. All things considered, there was no way that we could justify the significant cost for BU...(D ended up at U of Md and LOVES it). We would have paid the $$ had she been accepted at MIT, but not for BU (her decision, but we agreed immediately). For a variety of reasons, I prefer public U's, but I don't know anything about UMASS-Amherst. Good luck!

The big advantage of BU is that it is in Boston, which is a great place to go to school. Whether it's worth paying for that is another matter.

I agree with consolation, but at the same time I don't think either of those will really make or break your career -- it isnt like either is so prestigious you will be guaranteed a job -- you'll need to work hard at both if what you really want is to go to a big 4...so choose which place you enjoy more and where the curriculum suits you in my opinion

Apply to both, see how your $$ package works out...and go from there. I would agree, though, that the opportunities in Boston are probably stronger than in Amherst. Also the campuses are vastly different. Do you want a huge university in the middle of western MA, which is rural, or do you want an urban campus?

How about Bentley? Near Boston smaller and mainly business

How about Northeastern -- in Boston, more generous with merit aid for those who qualify -- and offering good coops (paid full-time internships) to business majors.

Thanks for all the feedback!
I know I'll have to work really hard if I want to get into one of the Big Fours.
I am actually applying to BU, Amherst, NEU, and Bentley. I actually visited both BU and Amherst and both of them feels comfortable for me. I'm going to visit Bentley, but I have a feeling it might be too rural for me. So I guess I'll see how my package works out.
Thanks again!

Just to reassure you, Bentley's not rural at all. Not a cow anywhere. Waltham is a small city (maybe 60-70 thousand pop.) and is easily accessible to Boston--20 or 30 minutes away.

my guardian is senior at BU so I'm pretty sure about it. BU however has grade inflation which influence students pretty much. SMG is good school, probably the second best at Boston (the first is Sloan). BU is stingy at offering aid though.
you may want to take a look at BC, Northeastern, Bentley, UMass.

^You sure about that? I've always heard BU has some grade deflation.

BU is a great place, but its buildings are old and there is no "campus" feeling. The construction there can be annoying and the main buildings of the University are on an incredibly busy road.

Location is great, but the school itself is not perfect. It costs a lot of money and there are a lot of students. If you want the college experience, BU does not offer it. BU is a large university in a large section of a large city.

Did I mention there is no "campus"?
