Hi! I was recently admitted into the CGS at Boston University with a guaranteed transfer junior year into COM and the regular communications major at UMass.
I am now between schools and my biggest hesitation with BU is the price. Graduating from BU would put me $80k in debt.
I was wondering if people thought it would be better it to have $80k of debt and a degree from BU, or no debt and a degree fro
UMass?
IMO $80K debt for a communications degree is not worth it from any school. Paying that back on a mid-$30K starting salary would probably mean living at home for a while - if you can find a job in your field. Take the debt free option
i’d say go to Umass, but it depends-- what do you want to do with your degree? Are you hoping to get into filmmaking or something? If so, BU is better. But if it’s just general communications, Umass is good too!
I’m not a big fan of debt either- for you or your parents. Both schools have an excellent reputation outside MA which is important. While BU has more prestige - is it worth that extra money? Remember, you are not guaranteed immediate employment at a decent rate of compensation after you graduate.
I can’t speak to the programs - you would know the pros/cons of each better than anyone. Have you thought about going to UMass for 2 years and then transferring to BU in your junior year? Can they offer you a decent tuition if you do that? Do you plan to go to graduate school? If you do then you should DEFINITELY go the cheaper route.
