BU vs. UMKC

Hi all. I got accepted to Boston University’s 7-year Accelerated Medical Program and University of Missouri Kansas City’s 6-year BA/MD program. I am considered out-of-state for both of these programs. My family plans to move with me wherever I go.

So, Boston University (BU) costs $60/65K per year (455K total), so the total tuition (when my family moves) doesn’t change because BU is a private university. University of Missouri Kansas City (UMKC) costs 60K for the first year, but then my tuition would go down to 30K—if my family moves and we’re considered in-state--(210K total). So there is a major cost difference.

However, UMKC is a tough program but there’s no MCAT requirement. It is also a less prestigious program compared to BU. However, BU is expensive, and I will also have to take the MCAT. I’ve also heard that the science classes are hard to get “good” grades in.

So, the question is, which program do I choose and why? Thank you for your help!

If I were you I would go for UMKC. It’s only 6 years and there is no MCAT. They are both excellent programs and you will become a doctor whichever route you pick…(well if you do well, etc) Good Luck!

So, I am a rising senior and I am looking into applying to BA//MD programs. Do you have any tips? stats? What kind of SAT scores and GPAs do you need?

Thanks!

@tdkeerthi, why are you giving advice if you yourself have yet to apply to a BA/MD program?

@hogwards you had two great choices. Which did you end up choosing? If the move is not a sure thing, I would take BU because it gives you 1 extra year. The 6 year pace I would imagine will be incredibly intense. But if you know you will get in state down the road, then UMKC will save you a lot of money. Good luck either way.

Oh and @roentgen the question posed asked for opinions, there was no restriction regarding from whom those opinions are to come. @tdkeerthi simply gave his (or her) opinion and did not hide the fact of his high school status. No harm done. Pretty sure every opinion on the internet is or should be taken with a grain of salt! :)

@hogwards, which program did you end up choosing - Boston University or UMKC?

If your parents move to Missouri you will not be eligible for in state tuition for at least a year.
