I am having a very hard time deciding between these two for transferring. I absolutely loved the city of Boston and the idea of having so many things to do on the weekends. But I feel like I might be turning down a great opportunity by choosing BU over UNC. I am visiting UNC for the first time this weekend, but I am worried that I will get bored there. I heard the parties are crazy, but to be honest, I go to the University of Miami now and have only been to like 3 parties this semester. Instead, I like to explore the city with friends on the weekends and go to interesting parks or museums. So my concerns are just for the social scene and the atmosphere, because I like the excitement of the city and don’t know if that will make me unhappy at UNC.

The reason I am second-guessing BU is because I feel like I am not being challenged at UMiami and that the academic environment sucks because most students don’t put their studies as their top priorities, and I know UNC is not like that but I wonder if I would be academically challenged enough at BU.

I am currently a pre-med Biology major.

Are you considering UNC-Chapel Hill? Is weather a major consideration? UNC definitely has it over BU if you want and need a more moderate climate. UNC has a more college campus feel. School spirit is probably better than at BU. BU biggest asset is that it is in Boston which has a lot to offer both professionally and socially. Academically, I would say that they are about even- although I think BU students do take their studies very seriously. Maybe BU has the edge and since you are pre-med, BU has a medical school and access to major research hospitals. I’m going to say that BU

Thank you, I was a bit worried about whether BU students took their studies seriously or if I would be in the same environment as UMiami. Weather isn’t that big of a deal to me. What worries me about UNC is that 80% of the students are in-state because I am so used to meeting people from diverse backgrounds in Miami. I do feel that BU fits me more and the city environment is what I want (not a huge fan of college towns), but I do want to be in a rigorous academic program so I don’t know if it is stupid of me to think of BU as less challenging because of its lower rank.

It is not stupid to think of colleges as ranks because a lot of work goes into ranks. However, colleges are not just ranks. BU is in Boston which has one of the best medical programs in the world. And BU’s rank has been increasing every year, and the students take their studies and programs very, very seriously. I would have to agree with MACLASSOF2013

You are correct that by law they have to take at least 75% of their applicants from in-state. If you want diversity, BU is definitely the place to be.
