This year, I got into the above school. Does anyone have any experience with the school? How is the general atmosphere and teacher’s relationships with students?
Congratulations. BB&N has a great reputation, and the students I know who attend or recently graduated seem as happy as those at similar schools.
Thank you for the comment @skieurope. I am eager to go to the school, but just don’t have much experience with it.
I have also gotten into Boston University Academy. Does anybody have experience with that school as well?
@ilikesharks44 BUA have a close friend with a daughter there. It’s very academic. Great for the kid who wants to focus 95% on academics. Very rigorous curriculum. No sports, limited ECs ( compared to other area schools). Early entrance to BU as a Junior is unique. For some this is the only place. They read Greek or Latin. Kids dig deeply into subjects. It is very diverse.
BB&N: IMHO: Used to be a feeder school to Harvard back in the day, no longer ranks up there with other area schools. Check out the stats. I don’t want to say anything negative so I would suggest looking up reputation on CC and college matriculation. Remember many kids already have Harvard/MIT connections due to proximity and parents working there so the numbers should be higher than elsewhere. Check the reputation in various circles. Best way to get info would be to go to revisit day and observe the students. Are they interested kind? Competitive? Diverse? Etc. Ask people who applied why they applied and how it compared to other area day schools.
BUA does offer a few sports per season, but they are not required. Academics is the primary focus and all students take BU classes in 11th and 12th grade. Latin or Greek is required in 9th and 10th grade (with limited exceptions in 10th grade for a new modern language pilot program). Revisit both and talk to current students.
Our son is in his senior year at BUA and overall this has been a terrific school for him. The classes are rigorous and the teaching is generally stellar. Because the athletics are low key he has been able to play soccer and basket ball all four years.
I attend BB&N, although not at the upper school. However, from what I can tell, people at the upper school LOVE it there, and are very satisfied with their school. Although there are people like me who will be coming from the Middle School (unless I get accepted off of a waitlist), Bivouac is a great opportunity for everyone to get to know one another. Lastly, college matriculation is excellent, and I happen to know a guy who just got into MIT!
@KnightsDude, I’m curious… why did you apply out for high school? And if you make it off the waitlist for the other school, why choose that over BB&N? Thanks…
I would also be curious on any thoughts on BB&N especially as perhaps the school’s reputation may have changed over the years. Desperate for more comments!
Thanks
I was just admitted to Andover. I guess I’m choosing Andover because I’d like to try something new in my life. I’ve been going to BB&N for literally 10 years. Although I’ve made many friends, I think I trying something new is going to be an interesting experience. @applehoney
@kazmom from what I’ve heard, BB&N’s college matriculation and test scores are excellent. At BB&N you will get into a GOOD college. The academic support programs are also very helpful, and they will help support this.
@KnightsDude congratulations! Yes, that makes sense- a change of scenery once in a while… totally get that. Our daughter loved BB&N, and ultimately chose Nobles. Good luck in your future endeavors!
@applehoney same to you and your daughter
