Anyone else accepted ED to Bucknell? YAY!! I’m so excited for next year now

My son is applying to Bucknell RD. He is a legacy--I went there. His SAT is only 1240 and his weighted GPA is 3.8-3.9. I told him to apply ED but he would not do it. He has great EC and recommndations and is a great kid. two questions. 1st Texas mom --what were your sons sATs and gpa and anyone else accepted I would like to know. 2 should he have an interview! He has been to the cmapus serval times to visit a friend from his high school. everyone was fantastically nice to him and he likes the school. Boy has it ever changed since I was there. It is truly a far more appealing school now. In fact, I was knocked out by the school.

Well my SAT was a bit higher than that, in the 1300s and I had about a 3.3 GPA but I'm sure with his GPA and the fact that he's a legacy he will have a pretty good shot. YES definitely interview! That's what they are looking for - interest in the school. I interviewed on campus and met with a college rep off campus AND I applied ED so they knew it was my first choice and that I was really into the school. yes, I must admit the campus is absolutely gorgeous and the facilities are great.

Hi - just happened on the Bucknell board looking to see if EDs were out for a friend's son. My son visited Bucknell in the summer and the admissions officer made if very clear that he (the regional rep) expects to hear from the students - that he wants to know how much the student is interested in the school. He told our group to email him - ask him questions about different majors, etc - he indicated that he likes to champion students during the round table reviews of applicants, applying from his region, but that he can't do that if you don't communicate with him and give him some sense of your interest and interests, some ammunition. I would find out the regional rep and start a dialogue. My son visited and then had an interview locally. Although he liked Bucknell, he had his heart set on another school. We thought it was a beautiful campus, the students seemed happy and engaged. my son liked the frats, I was not thrilled <g> and we wished for a bigger town.....! Good luck to your son, I think he has a chance for Bucknell. I</g>

Thanks to both the people who responded to my e-mail. This is very helpful. i will note that we stayed overnight on a Friday night and my son went out with some of the freshmen. I drove around a bit and watched a very interesting water polo tournament at the marvelous athletic facility. When I went to Bucknell, the freshmen men still wore dinks and outnumbered the ladies by quite a bit. There was almost nothing to do for us on a Friday night. What I observed recently was a greatly enlarged campus with beautiful immaculate grounds and the entire town near the school was nothing but student housing with a social scene that looked like it was in a beach town. The school is clearly much different today --for the better. I know the kids work very hard because my son's friend is very smart and taking engineering classes and works hard and plays hard.

Bucknell09:
Congratulations! My son loves Bucknell, and he will probably get in RD, but I don't think they'll have any merit $ to offer him and we probably won't qualify for need based. Did they send you financial info with your acceptance?

Sorry! I wasn't subscribed to this thread and I usually just check when I've been reminded!

First: Congrats Bucknell09! My son is home from school right now, but if you'd like to contact him let me know.

Relaxwolf: my son's stats are here: edit I can't get that to link

go to prstats.com class of 2008 user txboy

My son LOVES Bucknell. He lives in McDonnell ie "Hotel Bucknell" and it is quite nice, even after two kids playing football inside broke a sprinkler head and flooded the floor! He has found a lot to do both on and off campus. He travels some weekends with the debate team..they've been to UMCP and to GW in D.C. for example. They have a great live music scene and they've done a lot with campus activities of late. During the election both parties put the students to good use. There are also a lot of great speakers that come, and a lot of free entertainment by the various Bucknell groups.

Bucknell's football team did very well this year as did soccer and women's volleyball. There are a lot of athletic events to attend if you so choose.

RE interviews: highly encouraged. My son went up to Houston to interview with a regional rep. I am in contact with the western regional rep if anyone needs that info. He also went and visited the campus. He saw it in the rain on a dreary fall day, and still LOVED it the best.

Weenie: Bucknell was trying a pilot merit aid program, but they give great need based. You might be suprised at what you qualify for. Make sure you fill out the CSS profile. They actually come in lower than the FAFSA. Our financial info came about one week after the acceptance, but in plenty of time to compare packages before any deadlines. My son's package is almost entirely grant with no work study. With two in next year I expect he'll pick up some work study as our need will increase.

Oh...and although nobody has asked....we are thrilled with the academics. Our son's freshman seminar professor is also his academic advisor. With his guidance, son will lack only one class to complete his core at the end of this year, and will have enough for a minor.

Feel free to ask me and I'll answer what I can.

=O i just thought of something. texastaximom... is your son andrew? if so... i know him! =D i am friends of steve, justin and dallas. ive played uno with andrew and those guys at 7th st. oh.. i was also there the time justin played both him and steve in chess at the same time. haha what a small world.

Yes! That's him! He's laughing right now....waves hi to Tiffany

haha tell andrew i said hi. i hope he enjoys his break and that you all have a great holiday.

texastaximom, I was wondering if you could tell me more about the debate program? What stlye of debate do they do? Did your son debate in h.s. as well? Can anyone join the team?

Bucknell is trying to get their team up and running. They do parliamentary debate (two person teams). It seems to be a hybrid of LD and CX. He likes it a lot. He did LD in high school, but any and all comers are welcome. Bucknell just hosted a tournament the first weekend in December. He's also attended tournaments at GW in D.C. and UMCP. Penn, Princeton, William and Mary, and Johns Hopkins are regulars on this circuit.

That's really great to hear. I'm currently competing in LD in high school and I plan to continue debating in college. Thanks for the quick reply and answering all my questions.

I'm a Bucknell 2009 Acceptee! I'm so excited! Anyone else out there?

Welcome harasbunk and congrats on your acceptance! My son's an 08, but happy to answer any questions.

I hope to be able to add my name to this list sometime in April...we'll see.
I've got the stats and everything I just they like my recs (I also got a rec. from an alumni).

Only thing I'm worried about is that I wasn't able to actually visit the school, but it is certainly my top choice. I have had an interview with an alumnus, though, but is there a way to show them that it is my top choice even though I was unable to visit?

Your alumni interview shows interest. I think colleges realize that not every student can come for a campus tour before applications are sent. My son visited Bucknell in the rain, and it was still his first choice! The campus is lovely.

Thanks for the reply texastaximom but would that be enough?

I'm thinking of putting in a little letter/note (just a few lines) telling them that every opportunity we had to visit was marred by my work responsibilities and that now that my work season is over (I work at an apple orchard) I will be able to attend early 2005.

I would certainly drop them a line and let them know you intend to visit now that your work season has finished. Perhaps if they know you are coming in advance, they could tailor the visit to your interests ie meet a professor in your intended area of study for example.

Oooo! Cool, thanks!
