Hey, I’m interested in what students do with their free time Bucknell. Any cities near it? What is there to do on campus? How is the atmosphere? How is the workload? The food? Any replies would be greatly appreciated.

cities near bucknell? no, i wouldnt say that! its definitely a rural campus, but thats not an entirely bad thing. it means things like school spirit and people staying on campus on the weekends, the university bringing FREE things to you and the town (lewisburg) revolving around the students. its not for everyone, but there are definitely more benefits to attending a small, rural school than a lot of people realize.

is there as much to do as a school in a big city? again, no. but theres no shortage of things to do on the weekends. the party scene is there if thats your thing, but there are more bands and movies and lectures and campus performances than you could possibly see. lots of other alcohol-free activities are also sponsered. during the week things are a bit more quiet, but thats mainly due to the workload. its heavy, but rarely unbearable (meaning youll be busy, but not always on the edge of a nervous breakdown). free time during lighter weeks is usually just spent hanging out, watching a movie with a couple friends, going downtown for a wing night, et cetera.

bucknell also participates in division one sports, and the home football games in the fall are usually well attended by students (though the team hasnt been very good lately). on the other hand, home basketball games have become a winter event.

as for lewisburg, its cute. route 15, which runs by campus, has the walmart/fast food thing covered. downtown lewisburg, which is maybe a ten minute walk from campus, has some really cute shops, a fantastic vintage movie theatre, several art studios, and some great restaurants. for context, a book published several years ago ranked lewisburg as the 15th best small town im america... though im not sure its THAT great.

the food on campus is also quite good. there are a few different places to eat, which helps keep things from getting too old, and all of the facilities are quite nice. the main dining hall, where youll probably have most of your meals as a freshman, was fairly recently renovated (2002?) and provides plenty of options. the bison, the other main eatery, is a food court and has pretty good pizza, burgers, subs, wraps, et cetera. it all starts to get old by the end of each semester, but i actually miss a lot of my favorite meals over the summer... so it cant be that bad! ive been to lots of college dining halls and the only ones clearly better were cornells.

i think i missed the overall atmosphere question! bucknell is a pretty laid-back place with a very well-rounded, well adjusted student body. its not a school full of nerds, but its not a jock school or an artsy school, either. it attracts the people who are a little bit of everything: the kids who were in the school plays, on the basketball team and scored a 1300 on their sats. these kids are more 'preppy' than not, but i have many friends who are everything but and absolutely love it.

Thanks a lot for that post. It answered a lot of questions.
