May 1st is almost here, and I really have to decide pretty soon. So, I’ve narrowed my decision down to 2 schools, Bucknell University and Washington and Jefferson College.

Bucknell: 26th on the liberal arts ranking, great reputation. But…greek life is HUGE, the school is lacking in diversity, and it’s in the middle of nowhere. I would only have to take on a 4,600 loan each year and a family contribution of about 3000.

Washington and Jefferson: Around 97 on the liberal arts ranking, 12th oldest school in the states. Graduating students have one of the highes acceptance rates to law school…the staff there is very supportive and they seem to truly care about the students. I visited the campus that thought it was very nice. Problem is that I need to take on almost a 10,000 loan each year.

So, no-brainer, I decided to go to Bucknell since it was cheaper, even though I liked W&J more. Here’s the twist…w&j just notified me that they’re basically willing to match bucknell’s offer.

Where should I go? Dream school (w&j) or Bucknell(school with better reputation)?

i guess responding to the trinity thread obligates me to respond to this one as well.

first, congrats on getting into bucknell! my suggestion is to go to the school where you think youll be happiest. that may be w&j or that may be bucknell.

second, its true that the school isnt particularly diverse (though its actually quite a bit more diverse than my high school), but race/class relations are quite good. and yes, lewisburg is definitely rural. but its a really cute town with quite a few good restaurants. and because the university knows theres not too terribly much to do off campus, the on-campus opportunities they provide are fantastic.

but two things:

one, dont lose sleep over the whole 'frat' thing. if you want to go out and get drunk, its there. if you dont, the university spends an incredible amount of money providing everything under the sun (well, moon) to do on weekends. i had a girlfriend who doesnt drink. i had a roommate who doesnt drink. one of my best friends doesnt drink. i have friends in frats and sororities who dont drink. and theyre all happy. its only a big deal if you let it become one.

two, dont worry about law school acceptance rates. getting into a good law school is about what you do. its about your grades and your lsat scores. fact is, most schools have really high law school acceptance rates. and those that dont have lots of tools to make theirs higher, like advising students apply to a bunch of 'lesser' law schools and dissuading unqualified candidates from applying at all.

also, if you have any questions, feel free to ask away on the devoted thread (to make things easier for everyone else).

Kids from my school who are going to BU have 1300's to 1500's and 4.0+'s.
Kids who are going to W&J have 1100's and 3.5's

I think BU is the better chioce by far
