Hey everyone, so i have been accepted into colorado college and i am crossing my fingers for bucknell. I am planning on attending medical school after college so i am looking for a place that i wont be way to distracted. On the other hand, i would like to "work hard and play hard," not solely study. The thing that worries me about colorado college is that i hear it is a hippy school, and i find hippies to be dirty. I am a conservative, but i dont care what others believe really, so the liberal part of colorado doesnt really bother me.. just the hippies (so any input on that would be nice). Also, i am worried that it might be way to small. I am looking for a small school that encourages class discussions in classrooms, but at the same time, i dont want my college experience to be the same as that of my high school (cc student body - 2000, bucknell 3500). I dont know much about bucknell other than it has a beautiful campus, preppy kids (i find this as a negative since i am from the west coast), and good looking women (positive).

Any input on either school will be much appreciated. Thank you

Bucknell has a beautiful campus and great facilities kind of in the middle of nowhere. It is NOT hippie, but very greek life oriented with some heavy-duty partying on weekends. The town of Lewisburg is very cute, has a mild 4 season climate, and there is no great skiing nearby. I would guess it to be middle-of -the road politically.

is it mostly comprised of preppy kids?

id really appreciate any input

Well it doesn’t sound like either one is right for you. You don’t like hippies, and you don’t like preps, which is what both schools are mainly comprised of.

shroomsm, you really need to go visit both schools. The Colorado College reputation as a hippie school is a little out of date, I think, but you owe it to yourself to go observe first hand on an overnight stay.

How serious are you about med school? Colorado College is on a block schedule - not ideal for the sciences. I know two kids who left CC for that reason. CC students aren’t hippies - nor dirty, you need to open your mind a bit, lol! - but they are much more liberal politically than the conservative area of Colorado Springs around the campus. CC students tend to be academic and accomplished, many go on to highly respected grad programs nationwide. It IS a small and intense school and in a bit of a bubble (again, political differences between town & gown) You should definitely visit if you can.

i am very serious about med school and i can see how the block plan might not be ideal for science classes, yet CC states that 88% of their students who apply to medical school get into their first choice program, so CC must be doing something right. I appreciate the info on the hippy/liberal atmosphere. The more \ ive been reading about CC, the more im leaning towards matriculating there. I love how everyone that writes about CC emphasizes how laid back the students are, which is really important to me…

But one thing I am worried about is whether or not the school will get too small, and eventually boring (as a result of never meeting anyone new).

gradeinflation.com suggests you can get a great gpa at bucknell.

One thing Colorado College has going for it in that respect, compared to most other LACs, is its urban location. The area around the college (within a 1 mile walk or so) offers a good outlet from the campus. And with the block plan you can go abroad, or go off to do independent study, in increments of 3.5 weeks (instead of having to commit to entire semesters). The school’s Venture Grant program encourages getting out of the box, too.

2000 students may sound small, but it’s not the same as 2000 students in high school. Every one of them passed through the selection process. So, chances are, even the hippie kids are A students who have serious extracurricular interests besides sitting around getting high.

With everything the Colorado Rockies have to offer, boredom is about the last thing you ought to be worried about. Closer to campus, you have a serious Division 1 ice hockey team to watch (no hippies on the ice, believe me), a good art and music scene, movies … and, lest we forget, a fair amount of studying to keep you busy.

thanks for the useful info tk, especially the link to the cc website…

Can anyone share some general information about bucknell or cc, even if it is not regarding to the info i first posted?
