I'm having a very hard time deciding between Bucknell and Lafayette. I'm going to major in Economics, and I believe they both have a strong economics program. I also know they're comparable in education/reputation, so I'm not sure what my choice will come down to.

At Bucknell, I received a $10,000 Dean's merit scholarship.

At Lafayette, I received a $16,000 Marquis scholarship.

Money is not an issue, but I included my merit scholarships just for reference. I know the Marquis comes with perks at Lafayette, but I'm not sure about the Dean's. I really like both campuses, so that isn't helping me decide. I like the size of both schools, so that doesn't help either. I'm just really stuck and beginning to be frustrated.

I plan on (hopefully) going to law school and being a corporate lawyer, so I'd like the best economics education to land a spot in the best possible law school. Which of these two do you recommend? Bucknell or Lafayette? I really need advice with this one.

Thanks!

Bump? Anyone with advice?

The Marquis is now the one and only merit scholarship offered at Lafayette. As you say, it comes with perks, including a $4,000 stipend for travel abroad. Bucknell’s top merit award is the Presidential Fellow scholarship ($12,500 per year). The Dean’s Scholarship is awarded to approximately 125 students from the top of the applicant pool. Congratulations on winning both awards.

Academically, both schools offer great programs in your chosen field of study. If you do as well as your high school career indicates you should you’d have your pick of top law schools coming out of either Lafayette or Bucknell. I think it comes down to how you feel about spending four years (three and a half at Lafayette with the unwritten semester abroad) at one school versus another. Maybe the larger student body at Bucknell, or its rural location appeals to you. Maybe you’d like to be an hour from NYC and Philly? Good luck with your decision; I don’t think you can make a bad choice.

I personally would choose Bucknell. I live in Northeast PA so I can say that just from living here Bucknell is considered to be more prestigious and it is more well recognized outside of PA. If you are looking at law school then I would definitely say Bucknell. Bucknell is more well known and more selective. Lafayette is overrated in my opinion.

I assume you’ve visited both of them. Are there any kids from your HS at either or both of them whom you could get in touch with to talk to? That might help you find out things like frat scene, party scene, sports, etc. – all those “out of classroom” experiences.

What do you need to know to make your decision?
