BUCOP Question

I can’t seem to find any info on BU’s website…can I double major in Marketing (SMG) and Advertising (Comm) without doing the whole BUCOP thing? What are the differences? Thanks for any info.

Also how hard are these schools to get into compared to BU as a whole? I have a 3.95 UW GPA, 33 ACT, 1/26 rank, tons of leadership stuff, etc. I will probably only choose BU over UT if they offer me some significant merit money. They sent me an application for the MLK Leadership scholarship - any info on this? Thanks!

SMG does not have a marketing major--you get a degree in business (a B.S.B.A.) and take the same set of requirements with the exception of four electives. Your four electives determine your conectration (marketing, OTM, IS, accounting, finance, entrpreneurship, law, etc.).

COM offers a different degree (I'm not too familiar with it), so you cannot just "double major." Double majoring refers to pursuing two majors in an arts and sciences school--you are really only getting one degree (a liberal arts degree), but you're concentrating in two different areas. That is not your case. You're getting a degree in communications and a degree in business.

It may be easier to get a degree in advertising with CAS (which may or may not be what you're really looking for) and communications with COM, but you still have to be in BUCOP.

Thanks for the response. I noticed that on the SMG website it says there is an advertising minor available...can this be crammed into a 4 year plan? Also is the reverse possible...advertising major w/ a business minor?

Yes, you can be a business major and minor in advertising or major in advertising and minor in business. You get the minor through your school and do not need to be in BUCOP. I'm not sure if it's shown on your degree or how that works.

Whether or not you can finish it in four years is up to you. I depends a lot on whether or not you have AP credits, transfer credits or are willing to take an extra class here and there. You'd have to speak to someone in your primary school. I also don't know what the requirements are for an advertising minor.

I don't recommend minoring in business. You won't take any marketing classes (you take the intensive version of Management as a System, Financial Accounting, Managerial Accounting, Org. Behavior and our version of business stats...that's it). You'll also be missing out on the best parts of the program of SMG. If you want to just learn how to advertise, I would stick to CAS, but if you want learn about business and marketing, I would make SMG my primary school and minor in advertising. You'll be better suited for the business world and be well-versed in multiple disciplines (and options are good when you're looking for a job at the end...especially if you're considering marketing).

How does the marketing program at BU compare to the other business concentrations?

I had a great professor for MK323 (part of the SMG core...which I would recommend you learn as much as you can about before choosing to come or not to come to SMG). I haven't heard any particular complaints, and they seem to have some innovative classes--beyond that, I can't say much about the marketing department.

Advertising is in COM. You can major in Business Administartion and minor in advertising, but you CANT major in Advertising and minor in Business administartion. You CAN do BUCOP for SMG and COM. BUCOP is two totally different degrees in unrealted areas. So you have to fulfill the requirements for BOTH majors. You can do it in 4 years if you have advanced credit from APs or transfter credits.

If you don't get the MLK scholarship you will likley get good financial aid with your stats or a half tuition merit scholarship if you do not qualify for finacial aid. To get more specific info on MLK you may want to check out the various BU forums on livejournal.com

You don't have to do anything special for the half tuition scholarship, or the 10K ones, they just go by your regular ap and if you are in the top (could be top 10% but that seems flexible) then they will offer it. I beieve for the regular full tuition one there is a special application that requires yor principal to nominate you or something like that. It may also need to be submitted a little earlier--say by Dec. Check on the web site --serach under merit scholarships.

I got my principal to nominate me for the MLK and Trustee scholarships and will have everything turned in by the deadline (Dec. 1st). Thanks for your encouragement! I'm probably going to go to UT anyways lol

UT? Is tat Utah?

NO!!! The University of Texas at Austin

Hey..kcirch, ARE u at UT? I almost went to U-T Austin ...But decided not to because I missed the deadline for Team2-I'm at BU

I will probably be going there next fall...its between UT, BU, and WashU, but I'll prolly go with UT.
