My D is spending this semester in italy. She will be there for 4 months. She plans on traveling a lot. I expect two or three weekends a month, and during spring break. How much money should I budget for travel, food, and expenses. Basically, everything but Tuition and Board.

Thanks...

On many of the study abroad program websites, they include suggested budgets for out of country travel during weekends and extended breaks - depends on where she will be traveling to, method of travel, overnight accommodations etc…

One study abroad travel blog says that you should budget for $100 per day of traveling, but honestly you could travel on half that if you were budgeting and pinching pennies. With that being said I would budget approx $2,000 to $3,000 for traveling/food/sleeping accommodations for 3 weekends per month x 4 plus 1 week during Spring break.

I was in your ballpark. i was thinking 2,500 a month for everything. Any other opinions?

Depends where she will be in Italy - big city? middle of nowhere?

Also depends where she wants to go touring. Will she stay on the American Tourist Trail, or will she go to the middle east and north africa?

Florence is her city. Will travel mostly in Europe. I will be surprised if she leaves the continent.

I think that an additional $2,500 monthly is extremely generous - but if she has that extra money, she will be able to do more, and after all, for many people this is a once in a lifetime experience.

The figure that I posted previously was just for travel expenses…

I think you should budget at least 5000 for her. Last fall semester, I studied in Rome. My personal expense was around $6000 and I didn’t even travel a lot (Only travel to 4 times on the weekend). If she planning to travel in the weekend 2 to 3 times per month, expect to budget at least $8,000.

^^ I think you missed reading that socaldad plans for $2500, so for 4 months it’s $10000.
I sincerely hope you didn’t spend $6000 per month.

My D studied in London for a semester. She took out extra loans ($10,000) to pay for her travels and merriment. I think an extra $2500 per month should be adequate with room and board and tuition all paid. If she wants extra, perhaps she should use her own savings.
