I'm entering my freshman year at a community college this coming fall. I am already considering transfer schools, and plan to go SUNY for financial reasons. I hope to go into the field of journalism. I just visited Buffalo State College and liked the campus and location. I've also heard that it has a large communications program and a lot of majors to choose from. I'm just a little skeptical about how good of a school it actually is; any alumni here that can help me out? If it's not great, what college is (esp. regarding communications, journalism, etc.)? I'm from Syracuse and don't want to go to far from home.

I always think of Oswego and Plattsburgh for SUNY schools with good journalism programs. But, really, SU’s is probably much better and right in your backyard! Any reason you’re not applying there?

Newhouse at SU is a great school for journalism, but tuition is far too expensive. If I do grad work, I might apply to Newhouse, but I’m looking for something less costly while doing my grad work. I may get a scholarship to SU depending on my years at Community College, but I’m planning just in case I do not get one.

Plattsburgh has an excellent communications dept and has just tweaked some majors/minors in that area. I don’t know too many details because my D has a different major and I just saw it on the site.

When I was applying to colleges, I got into Syracuse and BU for journalism but couldn’t afford them. I went to a CUNY school but wound up changing to poli sci. I couldn’t handle the pretend interviewing of parents of Son of Sam victims and I was not cut out for either broadcast or field journalism. I am glad I took the courses, as they helped my writing immeasurably and have been very useful to me in my career as an attorney.
