Do you guys know if the orientations are mandatory? I signed up for it and paid the reservation and everything but I was wondering are they necessary? You see, I was suppose to travel back to Vietnam on the 7th but the earliest orientation date available is the 11th and its postponing my trip. Not to mention I live in NYC and the bus dates do not accommodate the orientation time. If it is not mandatory, can I get a refund of my money?

According to UB failure to register for orientation creates an advising hold, i.e. you won’t be registered for classes. You should call and talk to them.

See [UB Orientation: Orientation Programs](http://orientation.buffalo.edu/step4/)
You should be able to attend a program after you return back from Vietnam.

Their last session is on August 1st I believe which is in the time I would be in Vietnam. After talking with my parents we’re postponing the trip until after orientation, the thing I am worried about is the cost of going up there. My dad wants to tag along but he would have to find a place to stay because Buffalo will only provide me with a place to stay. The cost of going to Buffalo from NYC using Amtrak is 250? for a round trip for 2 people. That’s not including the price of a hotel! We’re guessing to spend a bit more than 700 dollars on just going up to Buffalo for 3 days! How can I cut this spending down?

Keep checking flights from JFK and LGA to Buffalo.

Sounds like your Dad will need to rent a car. There are inexpensive hotels/motels by campus just book early.

I think you should call the school and find out the process you need to take if you do not attend. I’m certain not all students can get to orientation.

Good luck. UB is a great place!

I could be wrong.

The parents don’t have to attend the orientation. I attended the orientation for transfer student’s parents last year. I don’t think I kept any handouts from the sessions.

Drive up to Buffalo? If you don’t have a car, you could rent one in NYC and drive up. With gas it might cost similar to Amtrack, but you won’t need to rent a car when you get here, and the trip will be shorter.

I paid $46 to take a greyhound bus from Buffalo to NYC. That might be something to look into.

So my father and I decided to drive up there, mostly for his sake so he can familiarize himself with the route in case he needs to drive up there for an emergency. Hopefully nothing goes wrong on the drive there because that is really a long ride.

ngan: we’re from So CAL. We’ve taken southwest and Jet blue from SO cal to east coast cities. right now southwest has $59 fares. Check it out and cheap hotels on Niagara Falls Blvd. UB North campus is in Amherst NY, which is where the orientation will be.

If you’re staying on NF Blvd, stick with the name-brand chain hotels. Don’t go to any of the no-name motels. While the area is very safe and suburban, there’s some sketchy motels on the boulevard.

i was going to stay in a nearby hotel, from the ratings some enjoyed it others absolutely hated it but I cringed at the idea of $150+ per night because of the expenses I will already be paying going to Vietnam, I guess I’ll have to take my chances.

What’s the place you’re staying? Red Roof on Flint is pretty cheap, close to campus, and not sketchy.

I looked into Red Roof and they don’t have a room available on the date I am attending orientation. I found a place called Motel 6.

dh stayed at red roof inn-lots of spiders! Motel 6 doesn’t sound like anywhere near campus. Is it on NF blvd?
University Comfort Inn is also on Flint.

There’s a Motel 6 on Maple and Sweet Home, right next to campus. Don’t know anyone who’s stayed there, but it’s about as close as you can get (other than the Flint ones).
