Buffalo vs Binghamton Reputation

Just a quick question. I'm out of state (massachusetts) and I always get questions like "Why did you choose Buffalo over Binghamton?" I don't understand at all what the big deal about binghamton is. Sure, they have higher rankings on US world report, but In my point of view, US world report rankings are Bull. The colleges pay there way in to get higher rankings. Buffalo has one of the best business programs in the nation, best engineering in the nation, and some of the best science programs in the nation. Plus, Buffalo has the highest endowment than any other public school in the northeast. And they have an INSANE amount of research. I don't see anything like that with Binghamton. People from Mass. go to binghamton and think of it being prestigious...but they don't even think of Buffalo. They haven't even heard of it!

I personally think UB is a much better school. Both my parents are grads of UB, and my dad is now a big time engineer for a big time defense contractor. He also works with a ton of UB alumni and he says they are top notch...along with grads from Harvard, Yale, Stanford, ect. He hasn't even seen any grads from binghamton. Our neighbor is also a grad from UB

So again, why does binghamton get the bigger reputation than 1; any other school in the suny system and 2; why doesn't buffalo get the higher reputation it deserves? I'm not saying Buffalo isn't regarded as prestigious, because it certainly is, but it should get the same rep as a school like uconn in my opinion.

Overall rankings, binghamton is better because all of its programs are pretty good and they are the most selective of the SUNY system. If you look on USNEWS for engineering/sciences, you will see Buffalo is much higher than Binghamton.

I know where your frustration lies. While I was planning on going to Buffalo, I got tired of explaining to people why I was going there instead of Stony which for some reason people think is the only good science/engineering school in the SUNY system. In the end, I put up such a good argument, I actually have 4 people that applied last minute for engineering and are enrolling. Ironically, I’m not going with them only because my first choice chose me, but I would have been happy going to Buffalo too.
