bugging out

okay, so i just had my AP chemistry midterm. The teacher allowed us to use our calculator for the whole test. HE NEVER said that we could not have anything on our calculator and because of this i had solubility rules on the GRAPHING calculator... and he saw them and took my calculator and now im afraid im going to get a 0 and plagarism will go on my final record.

i HATE OUR SCHOOL BC I KNOW I WONT EVEN BE ABLE TO DEFEND MYSELF, THE DEAN WILL JUST SAY NO AND GIVE ME A 0 AND REPOIRT IT TO COLELGES

MY CALCULUS TEACHER TOLD US THAT WE COULD PUT IN ANY PROGRAM WE WANT ON OUR CALCULATOR BECAUSE THEY DONT ERASE IT ON THE AP EXAM.... WHAT ARGUMENTS CAN I BRING TO SHOW THAT IT WASNT PLAGARISM, AS I KNOW IT WAS LEGAL TO DO

Look, thats cheating anyway
If you program all the answers in ur calculator, its not right

Its ur exam and u shd have the sense to clear the memory. If I carry my calc. with all the lessons stored in memory with formulae, its not specifically mentioned that I cant, but it beats the point of ur exam

Advice, dont argue.. its over and done with. Take the AP again (if u can)

Moral: Dont depend on a calculator. In India, we arent allowed one. Thus, SAT etc. I never used a calculator

okay in a traditional sense thats cheating. Had it been a sheet of paper, i fully agree that its cheating.

but IN PERSPECTIVE TO AP POLICY, and the fact that our teacher never had ANY form of a rule about calculator use and just allowed it for the whole test, it cant be called cheating

people stuff SAT math programs here all the time and its perfectly legit and even acceptable by the college board? come on guys theres got to be someone that agrees with me, every single person in my class does the same and agrees

I agree with you. Collegeboard clearly says that programs are allowed on AP tests. So, one would assume, in an AP class giving a practice AP test, if not stated otherwise, you could have calculator programs. But, I don't have any advice on what you could do. The only thing that may be helpful is have printed out the website where it says calculator programs are allowed on AP exams.

Ouch...you have to memorize that stuff in AP Chem....I just finished honors chem and we got to use a poster that she posted for solubility rules and activity series. We also got a paper that shows the charge of common anions and cations.

Ok, I see how that's cheating... but how is it plagarism?

right not plagarism - cheating but i cant fathom how what i did was cheating...

AP POLICY ALLOWS IT.....If he is going to give me the logic that for reactions on AP CHem actual exam you dont get a calculator, then does it make sense that he allowed a calculator for part I and all parts of the test? and then tells me i wasnt supposed to use it? that and he never once mentioned this year that programs on calc is cheating and that is not mentioned in school policy

can someone find the page where it says calculator programs are allowed? choclate?

I think it might be wiser to just live up to it and apologize and they may be more forgiving rather than if you made some excuse.

http://www.collegeboard.com/student/testing/ap/calculus_ab/calc.html?calcab#graph

under technology restrictions...some people need search engine courses.

you may be right, im just really upset that my whole college admissions process is over now- every college will reject me because of this over somthing that i wasnt aware of and truly to god felt was legit.

I wouldn't worry about being rejected. Just tell them that..you felt it legit...I'm sure many colleges would be okay with that answer. Or maybe you can offer to take the exam again to prove you don't need that program?

luckily if it is a 0 the grade doesnt get reported to colleges, as this only counts on 3rd quarter average. midyear reports havent gone out however, and im worried my counselor will attach a page explaining that i cheated and that every college wlil have a red flag and reject me. does anyone have a simliar situation or know how it works with colleges, thats the only thing im worried about not the dumb grade

This sort of reminds me of when my spanish teacher accidentally left up a chart with some of the prepositions and irregular verbs and we used it and when she found out she flipped.

fight for your rights!(literally)

this recently happened to a friend of mine. well, she actually cheated. It was our math final and she had a 89.2 in the class. All she needed was a 92% on the test and she could have an A (our teacher rounds up from 89.5). anyways, she was so nervous that she put programs into her calculator with equations and rules and stuff and the teacher saw her using them and gave her a 0 on the final. The fial was 20% of our grade and she now has a D in the class. She had a 4.0 otherwise, but this really ruined her.

and she wants to know, will this incident go onto her transcript forever?

yeah the 0 if i get one isnt an issue at all, i could care less it wont effect me

its just the damn fact if colleges find out about it. i thought that HS's dont send disciniplary reports, rather only the transcript but i could be wrong.

I think they're required to report any outstanding behavioral incidents. Maybe write an essay about this.

my counselor and I are tight, im going to go in and tell her the truth:
i didnt know i wasnt allowed to do that, its not mentioned in school policy or by the teacher, and that i regret making false assumptions and am sorry

thats the truth, i know that shell be able to empathize

stonecold- just tell your gc/ap chem teacher what you told us and they'll understand better than if you don't say anything at all
