Build and Program

What high paying careers are out there that would let me build and program? I’m interested in both programming and building things such as devices and electronics. I had an interest in computer engineering since it does just that, but someone told me computer engineers don’t have may jobs. I need something that’ll still be in demand in the future.

As far as computer engineering, it depends on the job, but there’s often not a lot of building and not a lot of programming. A guy I know with that degree worked with a small firm designing microcontrollers. I don’t know about the construction of those, but I imagine that it’s way too intricate for hands-on work. The guy mentioned that the programming he did got pretty low-level.

I’d just major in EE instead. There are jobs available for computer engineers, but it’s a narrower field than electrical. I think at my school the difference between the two majors is three or four classes, so it’s a very similar degree but it doesn’t pigeonhole you as much. There’s a huge range of jobs for EEs, a lot of them involve hands-on work and/or programming. I’ve seen some manufacturing guys in charge of machines on the production line who use both frequently.
